The RYA "doesn't know", so it's down to the forum.

Assuming that I am undertaking yet more essential business near to the mooring, does anyone know if the use of a sailing boat is a prescribed activity ? Most likely to be single handed. Will it be classed as similar to taking the dog for a walk, in that if I steer clear of other vessels, sailing for pleasure is a permitted activity ?

If your boat is in a remote(ish) place & you can get to it then you might get away with it. I suspect any boat movements will soon be banned, as they are already doing elsewhere, presumably to stop you trying to go anywhere else....

Have any activities actually been prescribed?

If they close facilities then it could be a pretty miserable experience if you are not set up for pacific levels of cruising endurance.

We are of like minds with Sarabande - though our weather is possibly more conducive.

We fully intend to divide our time between home and yacht - unless it is specifically restricted. We can get from home to yacht without interfacing with anyone and the boat is fully stocked ready for an extended period, like 3 months - though we would need to fish, successfully.

Sorry to say guys I think your in for a shock. We expected to be limited to where we could go but didn't expect that we be stopped from even leaving our berth , it seen there still a bit of movement in Greece although marinas are now saying if you leave there a chance by the time you come back to may not be aloud In if new rules are applied.
Most days we have a helicopter flying over head this is some thing we not seen before .
We now have to fill a form in just to go shopping , where last week the rules where you could exercie your dog and you could also exercise but not in a group . The latest notice I seen don't seen to mention it.
Sorry to paint a dark picture of time that may come.

At the moment the UK hasn’t imposed any significant restrictions on movement or activity. So far, it’s all advice: do this, don’t do the other. There’s legislation before parliament today (I think) which will give the government power to really restrict activities, moving from advice to prohibition. In other words, we will likely find ourselves in the position of being forbidden to do the things which we were advised not to do.
That may well include things like recreational boating, with restrictions like those imposed in Italian waters. I think we’re likely to find ourselves watching a good deal more box sets than setting sail this spring and summer.

Perhaps, although it's very hard to see how much harm it could do.

I’m in Spain just now, basic rules are you cannot leave your home, except: go to work, get food, get medicine. While you’re out you can buy fuel. This morning I was stopped by local police on way to shop; all very polite, but “go straight back home when you’re done” This makes it easy for authorities to apply the rules. Although sports, leisure, etc are prohibited it makes enforcement easier to have a “stay at home rule” in place. So, no visiting anyone or sightseeing or “but I was only.......” . UK must introduce similar measures in next week; Forget sailing this summer in UK. This is more serious.

Various countries seem to be competing to have the most stringent lockdown; I suspect it reflects more on inherent authoritarian tendencies in their politicians than any actual scientific necessity. There don't seem to be any sensible grounds for cancelling any solitary or family activities.

I'm certainly prescribing myself as much solo sailing as I can get and I'm sure lots of others will too. It seems a much more sensible option than moping at home on your tod.

It will come down to what is enforceable ... "stay at home" is easily enforceable, basically a curfew ... and it ensures that you can't lie about where you are going or what you are doing to continue to freely circulate among all your friends and the general public - apart from anything else, the police don't want to catch anything while stopping people either. Many countries are now only allowing go to work, get food, get medicine - as wallacebob said.

I've been sitting here in central europe watching the shutdown happen around me, and what we believed wasn't likely a few weeks back has now happened. It changes daily and the numbers are really starting to take off.

Make no mistake, this is nasty and it will overwhelm the NHS if it gets out of control. Recovery for a large percentage of sufferers relies on ICUs (Intensive Care Units) ... and there aren't enough to go round. The lesson form Italy is that many people die in corridors and on trollies for lack of bedspace, equipment and staff.

Don't let it happen in the UK - if people continue to go to the pub, the park, the boat, then the numbers will continue to climb, and at some point it's going to be a hard lockdown and thousands of dead people.

Pub yes, of course. How does taking the family for a walk round the park spread faster than taking the family for a walk round the garden or sitting glumly inside with the family, annoying each other?

Because you won't be the only family going for a walk round the park? - there will be other families with dogs and kids, not to mention joggers - people forgetting and intracting - little human petri dishes climbing all over park benches, playgrounds and touching anything that looks interesting. .... you might be able to walk round a park keeping a minimum distance from others and not touching anything, but stupid adults, hyperactive kids and dogs won't ... so it's just easier to ban everyone from the park.

Do you want hyperventilating joggers running past you at a distance of 50cm? I don't ;)

In the UK, I doubt if there will be many problems accessing a boat on a mooring. Head south a bit and it's a totally different ball game with plenty of police paying attention and very heavy fines if caught breaking the rules. In Portugal, maritime police also have the power to impound any boat and we've seen them do it for various reasons. We've left our boat in the yard where we can still live on it, as we were warned we may not be able to travel to/from the mooring by tender.
