A TCT cutting machine and TCT S/S blade is the tool for the job - no heat is created at all, swarf is as cold as...well...steel. They look like circular saws.
Don't put a TCT blade in a normal machine though (unless you want to top yourself).
I have cut a piece of bar in a lathe using a hacksaw in the past and I'm sure running the engine would work. Using hacksaws in lathes isn't recommended from a safety point of view and the other problem is that as you get closer to the centre of the workpiece, the peripheral speed of the job gets much lower so you have to end up doing some arm work as well. It's not the safest pastime in the world - but then neither is sailing!
