cutting/milling oil?

Thanks. Can you recommend anywhere to get some? When I google soluable oil it seems very expensive!!

edit: I meant to say that unless I know what it's called, I can't find it on Screwfix or B&Q. Don't know where else to try.
 
Model engineering suppliers, eg A J Reeves, sell both soluble and straight cutting oil in 500ml containers, ~£4 +vat. they do postal service.
Alternatively, perhaps taking a jam-jar round to a local machine shop might bear fruit.
 
The best place to try is a model engineering supplier, usually supplied in 1 litre bottles, which you dilute with water as you need it - so it goes a long way. Last time I bought some ( last year) was less than a tenner.
 
Soluble oil is mixed with water to make coolant, which is generally used in large quantities in a Lathe or milling machine, i take it you have neither otherwise you would know what your talking about, What you need is and this is a stab in the dark, is cutting fluid. i.e for doing a bit of manual tapping or drilling.....google "Rocol cutting compound". Its also way less messy than getting coolant all over the place.

If indeed it is a small amount of coolant you need do what Earlybird said and nip round to your local engineering machine shop with a jam jar or bottle. But to be honest if your just drilling a couple of holes or indeed tapping them too, as long as you get everything nice and square and take it easy and dont put to much pressure on things you would get away with using a bit of normal oil. no probs.

yes, it is a small one-off job and yes, I don't know what I am talking about.

How would I go about finding a local engineering machine shop?! Are they listed in yellow pages as such? I do try not to be a bimbo, but can't help it sometimes.

answered my own question. Just looked on yell and found someone who will do it for me tonight - result!

Yes, I thought his response was a little "cutting" too!

"Suds" as delivered to the cutting tool on most lathes in commercial machine shops is an emulsion which is also fine for small jobs so long as you can get at the cutting point to remove all the residue afterwards. However, if you are looking, for example, at cooling and lubricating the tip of a cobalt drill cutting in stainless steel then you might do better using paraffin laced with a drop of 3 in 1. What exactly are you doing?
