Cutless bearing

I decided that, as I am replacing my propshaft I might as well put a new cutless bearing on as well.

After two hours of grunting I finally got the housing unscrewed from the sterntube. Much headscratching then went on at the chandlers trying to trace a suitable replacement. While most of the stock items are made up of a plastic material (neoprene?) in a brass liner, the original on mine was a rubber-like material pressed into the bronze housing - no liner.

In any case there is no stock item to fit the internal diameter of the housing. Best advice so far is to buy a bearing with the right shaft diameter (1 and one/eighth inch) and the nearest external diameter, then get the liner turned down to fit the housing.

My obvious concern is weakening the liner, but that might not matter if it is contained in the bronze housing, assuming it will drift in OK.

N.b. Best solution would be to replace the housing with one with a non-bastard size diameter... but that means replacing the sterntube. Soddit.

Any thoughts/advice?

I had what I thought at the time was the same problem on a Jeanneau. Just a neoprene sleeve and no liner. This what came out and I sourced one exactly the same. I was surprised there wasn't a brass liner but it has not failed after 3 years use.

You could have the carrier bored a little and the nearest cutlass turned down, thereby giving it some strentgh, or if theres enough meat, just have the carrier bored to the interference fit of the closect cutlass bearing. I would probably drill and tap a hole in the side of the carrier and fit a bronze or 316 stainless grub screw, to ensure the new cutlass doesn't come loose, but thats old belt and braces, plus a piece of string me!

I notice you have a Hillyard so the cutless brg will be imperial. The best bet would be to get the next largest outside diameter cutless, and get the housing bored out to suit. This way the next time it's renewed it will be easy. BUT only if you have enough material in the housing. Otherwise you'll have to turn down the bearing to suit the housing.
What outside diameter is the cutless bearing? - I'll have a look through the catalogues I have at home.

DickH,
The internal diameter of the housing is one and 7/8 inches, 48 mm. The closest standard size brass lined bearing is 50mm. Length of the housing is 100mm., 4".
The walls of the housing taper to around 2mm at the prop end so I am reluctant to take anything off the housing itself.
I have learned that I can get a custom made bearing in phelon but it would cost an arm and leg. I guess I will get a 50mm lined bearing in the hope the lining thinkness will allow some to be turned off. The option remains of taking some off the interior of the housing and brazing a new sleeve over the prop end.

Thanks for your time.

I am in a similar process at the moment - replacing s.s. shaft 1.25".

The shaft and new cutlass bearing are coming from SILLETTE SONIC LTD, Surrey - 0044 020 87150100
email :sales@sillette.co.uk

Their standard list of Cutlass Bearings shows two cutlass bearings to suit 1.125" (11/8") shaft- shell diam. 1.625" or 1.75" - both 4.5" long.
These are available in Brass or Phenolic.

They say other sizes are available both in imperial and metric or a combination of metric shaft diam. with imperial shell diams.
Give them a ring -

Regards,

Duke.

Gordon,

Having fitted a cutlass bearing recently I know how concerned I was that I got the correct one and I feared that I didn't want to make an error on this critical component. I took the housing and the intact old cutlass bearing to the supplier for advice in the end.
The bearing I fitted was a COUNTROSE BEARING the web site on the box is
www.countrose.com may be worth a look.
Best of luck.
Trevor.

Just did me a special - turned 1.5mm off outside (mine's a big one...for my 40mm shaft...). They recommended GRP ahead of phenolic as it's more stable in water. I have a steel boat so can't use naval brass (but that's what I took out...)

Also ASAP catalogue is good - wide range in both imperial and metric.

Good luck
