I am changing my cutlass bearing very soon from a brass/bronze type to a phenolic one on my steel vessel and if I have to use a glue to stick it in what type of glue should I use ? and there are no worries about getting it out in the future as very easy access to the tube.

You should not have to glue it in. The outside diameter should be the same size as the existing bearing. It is normal for them to be a push fit with the added security of a grub screw, usually socket head through the tube to stop it from turning.

I believe you use some type of epoxy such as Araldite which can be heated and melted when you want to replace it again.

Glueing is the preffered solution for composite bearings, we advise using a low melting epoxy such as araldite 2011 (also known as precision) This allows easy removal after some heat is applied.

But check with the bearing manufacturer or supplier as they will be finished as either a clearance or interference fit.

Having aclearance fit also lets you confirm alignment as the bearing should spin in th ecarrier and on the shaft when the shaft is chocked in aligned position. The simply coaty bearing in epoxy and slide in let it set and you know you have an aligned bearing!

We have a calculator on our bearing page you can use as a guide for clearance tolerances.
