Help. Just fitted new cutlass bearing because the shaft was loose in the old one, but the new one is just as loose as the old one, have checked the shaft and it is not worn, i have heard that the rubber will swell up when in the water. Has anyone heard of this

I nearly fell for this, the prop shaft on Forethought is Metric 25 mm rather than Imperial 1 inch or 25.4 mm. The difference 0.4mm is part way to a rattly prop shaft.

The people at Trafalgar Marine stopped me buying the wrong one.

Also check the vibration is not a semirigid coupling - mine snapped partially (one of the metal straps was worn through by a slipping prop shaft) and vibrated like crazy. It damaged the cutless bearing and accelerated a slow leak Forethought has always had where the P bracket goes through the hull.

Get yourself one of these . I put off the expense for years but a Vernier Caliper really is an essential tool and does away with all that squinting with a ruler

If it a metal cased bearing I think swelling in water is wishful thinking, if it is a Phenolic cased one it will swell, but how much is a bit hit and miss.
