Hello,

I have recently bought a very fine Cutlass 27, made in 1969.

My insurance company has asked for the boat's registration number / serial number or other type of unique identification, and I can't find it.

The previous owner didn't have to give this information to his insurance company, so he doesn't know and can't help me - and to be honest it's all very silly. I have already provided my insurance company with the serial number of my inboard engine, which is worth more than the whole boat, so I don't really see the point of this... but resistance is futile, I guess.

The original documents for the boat are lost, so no help there. No id-number printed on the sails.
Sometimes, the boat builder will finish his work by adding a metal plate with a serial number, but I have searched high and low, but not yet found any such plate or inscription.

So, are the any cutlass 27 owners out there who might know where to find some kind of unique identification / serial number on my boat?

Kind regards

Thomas Maxe

A boat of that vintage may very well not have any such thing; HIN's only became a thing fairly recently! My Moody 31 (1989) has a hot pressed serial number on the hull, but that's purely a maker's mark of no global significance, as far as I know! I'm pretty sure my Dad's Halcyon 27 of a similar vintage to your Cutlass didn't have any mark on the hull; there was a Register mark on a plaque screwed to a bulkhead, but of course, that's only as valid as the registration which even if it was originally registered (which it may well have been; marine mortgages were quite usual in those days, and being on the Register of Shipping was a requirement for obtaining a mortgage), it may have lapsed.

On the Sabre 27 (same era, same factory) some of them had hull numbers impressed into the inside of the hull, under the deck join in stern lockers. Might be worth a look.

Alternatively, engrave a number of your own making on the boat somewhere discreet, and give them that one. I don't suppose the insurance company want to do any more than identify your boat in the event of need and certainly won't be able to tell you it is not right, after all this time.

Just don't give them the same number that I made up! :sneaky:

Nice boat Thomas! Looks like the new harbour developments near the Danish Standards Institute in Copenhagen?

I have never been able to find a serial number or hull number on Avocet. In the lazarette, on the inside of the transom, just above the top of the rudder shaft, I can see a small oval imprint in the fibreglass. it looks like there might have been a metal plate stuck on there at one time, and it is about the right size to put a number on. Maybe about 3cm x 2cm? I've never been able to find the plate though!

Marcon were somewhat haphazard about serial numbers, As far as Sabre 27's go some have a plate glassed in on the inside of one of the port cockpit lockers, some have a Hin on the transom or just fwd of it tucked up high just under the rubbing band. Many others had nothing at all. If you cant find one make one up yourself.

Thank you. No, this is in Struer ("the city of sound" in the western part of Jutland, small hometown of the world famous "Bang & Olufsen" sound systems factory). Beautiful marina: Yacht harbour - Holstebro-Struer Harbour

PS: And thank you all for your kind replies to my request. I informed my insurance company of your replies, telling me that a serial number doesn't exist, and the insurance company then graciously acknowledged that I cannot provide them with non-existing information. They were quite satisfied with the engine serial number. The total insurance sum of the boat is only £3,400, which is what I payed for the boat, and the engine itself is worth more than that amount of money, so I guess that makes sense. :D
