I dried out my Bene 373 at the Quay wall in Kinsale last week for a scrub and anti foul and discovered that my by Cutlass bearing /bene shaft bearing is shot.
To make thing a little trickier , there is a bit of damage to the end of the SS steel section of Stern tube that holds the bearing. I'm waiting to get on the hard next week to properly assess this damage.
I may have to repair the end on the stern tube before fitting the new new Bene type rubber bearing .
(Ryan and Sophie give a good account of the process on u-tube on a similar Hull and Prop Set up.)
My Engine is a MD 2040 with 30 mm Shaft. . The cupling to the Gearbox is the type which has a keyway on the shaft and is bolted to the threaded end of the shaft. Should be fun to get off!
Does anyone know the size of the retaining nut holding the units onto the shaft?
I see a Guy on U-tube using 4 long bolds and a socket between the gearbox flange and the coupling to Jack off the coupling. Ill try this method first. Anyone try this method already ?
I'm worried about the damage to the end of Stern Tube where the Shaft Bearing fits. I'm thinking of cutting the shaft shorter( 1 " ) I Don't like the increased overhang to the prop and am considering designing a SS Sleive to fit over the stern tube , fix to the back of the keel where the shaft exits, and so restore the area for the Cutlas location to its original dimensions. Has Anyone considered or attempted this type of fix? Ill try to upload a drawing of what I mean.
My Ideal solution to fixing the stern tube is to replace the existing one completely.
Has anyone attempted this on a similar Beneteau Hull ? I think that the hull - shaft set up is similar to the Bene 343 and many of the Oceanus 37 to 42 footers from 2000 onwards.
I was unable to find anyone on U Tube doing it on a similar boat/ hull.
Very interested to hear from anyone who has experience in this area.
Regards, Ted
