Custom burgee

I started a facebook group a while ago for a design of small yacht. There are a few owners that have joined, but it's not a club and there are no membership fees or club committee etc. Is it OK to design and sell a 'club' burgee to members of the group?

What I'm asking is, can you sell and fly a burgee even though there's no 'formal' club behind it. In essence it would identify to others that you belong to the facebook group (in theory!).

Within reason, you can fly whatever you like from your yacht, although I wouldn't risk flying an ISIS burgee.

However, don't make any profits on the burgee sales or you will have HMRC to answer to.

Absolutely you can. Whilst you should abide by the rules of a club whose burgee you wish to fly, you’re free to fly any one of your own. After all, what does a house flag denote but a club with a membership of one?

Yes, definitely you can. As a burgee at the masthead or spreader it's entirely compliant with both the law and flag etiquette.

Ensign Flags in Liverpool is one option. They will hold a pattern on file and thereafter make individual flags to order, though you need to order an initial batch (I think maybe ten?) to cover the costs of creating the pattern.

They're not especially cheap, though I don't think the prices are unreasonable for small-batch custom sewing work. The shapes of the design are cut from fabric and individually sewn to the flag in the traditional manner, giving a very high-quality result.

I have used Ensign flags very successfully for custom flags. I don’t think that there was any significant discount for multiples. I have only bought 2 of one design in the last 10years, so no trouble y getting one.

No, indeed.

What I meant was that they would not let me send a design and then sell all the flags one by one. They were happy to sell one-by-one on an ongoing basis, but only after an initial minimum order of ten to ensure they weren't out of pocket on the pattern-making costs if subsequent orders didn't materialise. I don't know if that's always been their policy, still is their policy, or is applied selectively depending on who's ordering, but it's what they told me a few years ago.
