Does anyone else feel that God is trying to send them a message? in the last week I have had:-

1) the complete failure of a highly expensive antifouling system, with barnacles waving little red tentacles at me only 2 months after launch

2) the constant deflation of one side of my Zodiac dinghy, which I bought brand new and is not six weeks old yet

3) the failure of the shore power electric element on my water calorifier, which came with the boat and so is only just 5 years old

Is God trying to tell me to give up sailing or what?

Have I simply been unlucky?

My wife was suggesting that we appear to have had worse luck than most generally the other day.
I thought about this - then realised that our "luck" is no worse than Joe Normals (Sorry Joe - no offence intended!)- it's just that we have more stuff in our lives that make for a greater number of potential problems inanimate or otherwise.
If you sat in your house all week with newspaper and slippers then nothing much would go wrong round about you.
Get on a boat, surrounding yourself with a bunch of systems, each of which has multiple potential failure points and suddenly you feel unlucky?
Maybe we should feel luckier - if less goes wrong than probability would suggest. Or am I an optimist?

How about an engine temperature sensor that starts off at 90ºC when the engine is stone cold, so by the time the engine temp has risen 10º the alarm thingy goes off. Bleedin' malevolent that is. Still, it's about to find out if it can float - that'll teach it who's boss.

You know when, for example, you are pulling a rope the length of the deck and the free end somehow manages to do a double back flip and tie itself in a perfect clovehitch to the boat hook?

A friend of mine used to say that when a rope had learned a trick like that, you had to replace it or it would just keep on doing it!
