I read today that Currys is to stop buying in any more conventional light bulbs to sell in their shops.

They cite one reason as: "that a 100 watt filament bulb left on for half an hour creates enough carbon dioxide to fill a ballon."

Well, I've searched every bulb in my house, but I can't find the little hole it is escaping out of.

Coincidentally, I went to B&Q today to buy a new bulb for my oven, which can only take a conventional bulb due to the heat, which would destroy the circuit board of a low energy bulb.

So I assume whilst Currys takes the high moral ground in their press releases, they will continue to sell ovens with conventional bulbs fitted. But, if it blows, they can't sell you a new one.

The only thing global warming has created in the last few weeks is hypocrisy.

Anyway, I will leave you with that, as I am off to the Isle of Man tomorrow and I am really looking forward to it.

Make that years and you have my full agreement

I agree, what a fiasco.

The trouble is, just because a bunch of bozos with zero understanding of the issues have a burning desire to appear greener than thou for commercial or political gain - it doesn't mean there is not a real problem.

I can understand the cynicism when all the public see is this kind of ignorant posturing.

And there whipper_snapper you have hit the nail on its exact dead centre. Leaving aside the issue of whether or not the problem is real, or even might be real, the bandwagon it has created has become a problem in itself.

If there was less posturing, maybe even more personal hair shirts from the politicians and certainly fewer international junkets it would become more credible, or at least generate less cynicism.

Hypothecation of green taxes to alternatives would be a small start, but I suspect would break the Treasury and Chancellor's collective banks. Another start would be a bit less of the "your lifestyle aspirations will need to be abandoned", because nobody will support that. Horror stories in the media, skewed either way, just feed the cynics.

It would probably do the climate change is heppening science a significant favour if they made formal repudiations of political afilation, eco warriors and their fellow travellers, and did some serious focussing on alternative reliable high load primary energy sources that we are "allowed" to use. Hope, not fear.

Remember the old tale of the witchunter. Welcomed by the village as a saviour from nebulous evil. Villagers were even happy when a witch was unmasked and everyone joined in at the burning. Except the family whose granny was arrested. And with witches at five bob each, the next granny was not long in being found, then a spinster, then someone's Mum and and and....

Senator McCarthy, whither art thou?

I do try to use fluorescent bulbs where I can, more to save elec bills and reduce the frequency of replacements (though I had two blow last week after only a few hours use).

But try getting a wall light fitting that will take one of these bulbs! I've spent ages trying to find fittings that weren't totally naff and the only ones I've found won't take anything bigger than candle or golfball bulbs.

The building regs now say that you should only fit outside lights 'capable of taking only low-energy bulbs'. Sure you can get the special square-fitting bulbs but can you buy non-industrial lamps to put them in - can you hell!

you could market them as fire suppressants ......... stored in a fire risk area and released in the event of a fire

they would quickly put it out /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

CO2 party

Ooh co2 is very good fun in a a fire extingisher fight. Jolly fun! Much better than tghe useless powder which makes a right mess and you have to back coughing. The co2 is very decent gear, quite cold tho very blasty and star wars-ish

er, ahem. so i hear.

Re: CO2 party

best use for a co2 extinguisher is to use them to propel plastic bottles across the room to dislodge the pictures hanging on the wall /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: CO2 party

Do avoid spraying other's genital areas though as they end up with crystal balls. Could be an expelling or suspension jobbie. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

FFS!! All those Currys stores across the country with lights blazing all day and all night, rows of TVs on 24/7, and they make a big play about light bulbs?

First thing I thought! lol!!!!

The other thing is the built-in obselecence of items sold by these shops.
My computer printer refused to do its work... print manager came up with a message saying an internal component needs servicing... return to retailer.
Retailer says its out of warranty... it will cost £60 just to look at it.
I bought a new one for £30.
I suspect the "component" is a bit of software designed to send my perfectly good printer into a hole in the ground.
Harrumph!

And China goes on and on....

...making the bloody things.

When will everyone realise that it is the disposable or obsolescence culture that is the VASTLY greatest generator of greenhouse gases and make some things that last.

I don't want to see a vicious regime like that of China succeed in the economic world and MUCH LESS by taking the planet's future down as it does it.
