Current Fuel prices, mad or what?

It depends on what you want to use your boat for, I guess we fall into your "Big Boat" catagory 38ft twin 365HP desiels; although there always seem to be even bigger boats around.

We have had smaller boats both Power and Sail and have "done" the Solent and most of the South Coast from Brighton to Weymouth many times, so we want to explore Normandy, Brittany and the CIs. I am happy to cross the Channel in moderate to poor weather, been caught out in Force 8 more than once but wouldn't recommend an long sea trip in that though, which wouldn't be possible in a 26ft boat.

So I will use my boat for long trips (and fill up at non UK prices and give M Chirac the tax Euros) but cut down on the afternoon blat about, fed up with the M25 Solent anyway. I agree with the sentiment on purchasing though, avoided paying the Premier Marinas rip off 60ppl this weekend, went to Cowes and paid 46ppl which must have included freighting it accross to the island.
 
I really do not think that smaller boats will become more popular - I go boating to cruise not sit around locally - its really a different market.

If you look back on my threads on this issue you will see I always stated that it was the cruising boat market that will get hit the most. Take out a lot of big boats and prices will rise in many areas for smaller boats.

It is not always the lack of money that drives the issue - its a question of value for money - is it worth spending £1200 for fuel on a two hout trip giving you 4 hours of boating - the answer is no for many with big boats.

The natural rise in fuel price - a doubling in 12 months is hurting now - if red goes then the industry will be hit hard, very hard.

You can listen to civil servants and local council employees etc all day - they were warned about Windermere and they still got it wrong, very wrong. They will not suffer because the the local drop in income - they will probably need to employ more people to manage the change ....... I never expect one drop of common sense from such official bodies as national parks and I am never dissapointed.
 
Twin diesels used sensibly very economical indeed.

28 ft and twin diesels.That prospective new boat will be perfectly capable of using 2/3 gallons per hour at moderate speeds.Ideal to slowly cruise around and enjoy all those now deserted inlets and bays,free from wash and noise.

Like house prices though it only matters if you're actually going to sell. I chose my latest boat to be the last one I ever buy so it doesn't make much difference to me how much it's worth in 40 years time, and building it myself means it's only cost me half of what a ready built one would as well! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes, but have to get there first, which would require more like 10-15gph on the plane with twin engines. Quite happy to potter once I have felt that I have got somewhere (else).

All fuel retailers should hoist a big banner:

WE ARE NO LONGER FUEL RETAILERS BUT UNPAID TAX COLLECTORS

When you are paying for the fuel you have just bought remember that for every 94p per litre you are paying over 60p duty and tax and the oil companies and retailers are only getting just under 33p for the product. The retailer only gets just about 3.75p. Difficult to quote on Red diesel as the prices vary so much.

PS Local Esso station jumped 4p this morning to 93.9 for unleaded just as a fuel tanker left. Presume they had just seen the bill! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

What gives me the feeling that GC1 will be pleased? Gordon (misery) Brown certainly will be - more money to waste on useless government bodies which will help to reduce the fraudulent unemployment statistics, except that they don't work.

Not good for me at all, in fact I spent my £50 in Tesco to get my 5p a litre off then filled the boat, but it only needed 25ltrs /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Spunked all 244 ltrs going to Weymouth from Poole and having fun then returned and filled up at Cobbs without thinking, had a great day pottering about then found I had paid 1.37 a ltr, nearly choked on my pot noodle /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Makes spending £50 on 80 pot noodles pointless just to get 5p a ltr off /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

As for keeping a boat long term that is my idea, but waiting like a vulture to get my £80K off the £150 asking price..err.... Brand new Cranchi Zaffiro with twin D4's firmly in my sights /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Might as well join the tossers lugging about heads, showers and cabins and have more room to take friends who have had to sell up (for a large fee of course ) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nice idea, unfortunately it assumes that the only market for these boats is in the UK. There is a European Market for these boats too, so what I suspect will happen is that whereas usage in the UK will decline, there won't be a huge price crash: they will just migrate to other EU countries or the Channel Islands.

Well, as I have said on many another thread, my LPG is beginning to look good at 40ppl. I was actually thinking of selling CI at some stage, but that stage will now come after the red diesel derogation review. Ya never know - CI could become worth a fortune! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
 
Something in what you say touches a chord...The one thing I really miss with my "larger" boat is getting up at 06:00 and going off skiing with a friend, or beaching the boat up for a day with family and picnic or beach BBQ. My recent thoughts have frequently strayed away from 4 berth small cruiser to RIB+outboard.

I don't know whether I'll do it...but the thought has crossed my mind. Everything (mooring, servicing, fuel, insurance etc) is so much cheaper. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Listen moron, I said that it wasn't anything to do with being able to afford the cost of diesel but with being prepared to pay the current price.

I took up boating with an idea of what the cost would be and at the time the cost were justified. If the cost of diesel keeps going up the cost is no longer justified and I'll do something different. And not because I can't afford it but because I'm not an idiot who spends money for the sake of it.

End result might be the same though, whether an individual can't or won't spend the extra on higher fuel costs, both might lead to the same decision to spend their leisure money elsewhere and lead to getting rid of their boat....
 
I'm not a moron I have a boat I can more than afford to run and don't have to pretend I am not using it because of a principle. I have never ever heard so much utter crap, not using your boat out of principle is pathetic, do you really think it will make the slightest difference, why not just own up and say you have bought one and have bitten off more than you can chew /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif . Perhaps realistic is a better word.

I can't for the sake of me understand why anyone with a big boat needs to give up boating if they truly love it. You can have just as much fun if not more in a smaller boat, just cut your cloth accordingly as they say.

Those who leave the boating world will not be the really lovers of boats, it will be those who are perhaps under pressure either by SWMBO or financially who will opt out altogether /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Or those t..sers who wouldn't be seen dead in anything under 38ft /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
