Current deck shoe of choice?

Lidl do good ones in leather and canvas. The canvas ones are like gym gutties and super light and grippy but they wouldn’t last long if you walked on the shore in them. They dry faster than socks

That wasn't my experience with the only pair I have ever owned. This was my shoe only three months after purchase from new stock, having been apparently good for a week or two. Fortunately the chandlers gave me a refund.

Forgive me for asking-- but what is wrong with that shoe?

Imagine lining the soles of your shoes with PTFE. That's what walking on them was like. The rubber had started off with a matt surface and as you can see became hard and shiny.

I use mine for every day wear so they get naturally scuffed & flexed so having had several pairs over the last few years I have never had that issue. Perhaps it is because you have not worn them enough- do you only wear them for sailing?

I am given to understand they outsourced production to China or similar.. with the expected results.

We are talking about a couple of months. Yes, I do wear my shoes ashore with the intention to scuff them.

Both my DuBarry boots and deck shoes went like this. I wear the "boat" shoes as casual "going ashore" footwear and they are still polished and have no wet grip. The boots are only slightly better. I had a similar problem with the Barbours. In fact the Barbours were so bad I binned them rather than relegate them to casual shore wear.

Tried Dubarry boots. The 'last' was completely the wrong shape for my feet so very uncomfortable.

Got some Orca Bay boots which are very comfortable and reasonably waterproof up to a certain level (i.e. prolonged rain, sitting on rail) then they will wet out.

The £25 gill deckboots turned up today. Great quality, will buy another pair to keep for when these wear out.

Even if I do look a bit of a t*t

Exactly the same as the Dubarrys I bought, though a traditional deck shoe type not a trainer-lookalike. Went from fairly good grip to ultra-slippy very quickly. Sole went hard.

Telegraph (the newspaper) are advertising deck shoes at about £39, reduced from £100

Dont know if they are any good

Slant. .....check out the deck shoes/beach shoes look just like deck shoes only cover all needs. Showers /wadeing/walking /pub/deck work. Only draw back is they lose their grip after a yearand half constant use. And they keep your feet warm. Cept in puddles. :-)-

+1, with their boots. Had to bin them after nearly slipping overboard!

I usually buy Sebago Docksides - shopping around online I bought a new pair last week for €80.

At the same time, as an experiment, I bought some Sperry Topsider Halyard deck shoes for €38; these have the excellent Topsiders sole with canvas uppers. My thinking was that with the canvas uppers, I'll be able to pop them in the washing machine, so that they might remain salubrious for a bit longer than leather ones.
