Cummins Mercruiser 4.2L 270HP

The engines you are looking at Greg should be white not black as Volvo paul suggests.............same engine so why my petty comment

When the black engines first came out back in early 90s they didnt have the best reliability record compared with the green engines which were a seriously dated design but agreed reliable.

Volvo Penta were eventually forced to modernise their range as new emission laws introduced.

The old reliable green engines were simply too dirty and were illegal to sell.

The new green engines were clean and now caught up the black engines but the new range suffered teething problems many serious.

Of course the Black engines had already been around for 10- 15 years and by the time your black engine was adopted by CMD and painted white it is a dam fine engine.

As to spares I m not really in a position to comment , in 6 years I have only needed filters / fan belts which are readily available (including ebay).

One engine did let me down once, 5 years 9 months old ish and it was repaired under warranty with very little fuss !

If the VM 4.2L range werent any good I would have sold my boat years ago , the engines are one of the main reasons why I retain my boat.:)

Thats interesting because the one we are looking at are very black.....

My mistake sorry.

Dont worry though because I was only attempting to say the early ones may have had issues.
You mentioned 4 years old I think, most issues were sorted years before that.
