Ive just discoverd that the Baltic is the home of the Vikings?? what if we meet one? should i take gifts?? if so what should i give to a Viking??

Are there boats sail boats or or mostly powered by gally slaves and fast?

Dose anyone know where Asterix village is?? If i go there will he mistake me for a Roman??

What advise for sailing these waters? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Asterix is a Gaul! The standards of this forum are dropping fast

If you do meet vikings, you'd better kill all the women on board less they fall into their hands, but most likely they won't be interested in you, as they will be intent on making their way to britain to rape and pillage, and the meagre prizes available on your boat will be of little interest by comparison

PS Parc Aterix, the Asterix theme world is in Paris

These days, most Vikings will settle for a large bottle of spirits and will then leave you alone. Probably.

Don't worry you will know when they are around, coz they always blow a thumping great horn. I know this for certain having seen the film. Da-Doooooo-Do....Da-Doooooo-Do, or something like that. I particularly like the bit where they carry on and play the first verse:- Da-dit-da-dit-da-dit-da-dit-da-deeeee.

[/ QUOTE ] Unless, of course you should be unfortunate enough to meet Sven Bendersson, the only gay viking in the Baltic. In which case you may be best to kill yourself, lest you should fall into his hands.

Re: most Vikings will settle for a large bottle of spirits

In that case i better not start with woman on board,

But what should i do if an escaped galley slave asks me to take her on board??

Now thats something to consider,I better add a large beach towel in case she comes without cloths! Ive heard their are left on beaches without cloths to prevent them escaping?

I suggest you do some background reading. I recommend the book below (and the others in the series). Excellent, whether you are 9 or 99, and particularly sound on how medieval Vikings have adapted to the modern world ;o).

Now you see there were no slaves on viking ships and they were no galleys either. All the oarsmen were actually volunteers.

Also as you sail a folkboat they will think that you are a viking yourself. Just keep the wine below decks and show off the vodka and the beer and the women.

There is Nothing like a Dane!

Dah de-dah de-dah di-dah etc

I learn'd it in England: where indeed they are most potent in Potting. Your Dane, your Germaine, and your swag-belly'd Hollander, (drinke hoa) are nothing to your English

Is your Englishmen so exquisite in his drinking? Iago. Why, he drinkes you with facillitie, your Dane dead drunke. He sweates not to ouerthrow your Almaine. He giues your Hollander a vomit, ere the next Pottle can be fill'd

Re: Viking in my bed

He may have been. The Viking in the stories (named Sigurd) was certainly equipped with a fearsome weapon, called Nosepicker, which he waved around at the slightest provocation.

Not sure I like the way this thread is going..................

you meen while we British were forced to sea by the press, you did it for pleasure!!

And when they see my Viking Folkboat they may think im a spy!!

Ok the Vodka and bier on deck, Of coures if it was whisky thats English but Vodka could be Finnish!

Careful with that. The Vikings were well known for using their boats as funeral pyres. Is your boat well covered for fire insurance?

I think you should do some reading. The Viking were mainly traders. Whisky comes from Scotland and Whiskey from Ireland. and they rowed the ships themselves!

Just begin some good whisky and wine and a big smile and a sense of humour, but them again your French? and you will be very welcome

I must comment on your assertation that most vikings were traders .the' vikings 'from the baltic (then refered to as the swede were undoubtebly traders but those from the west coast (norway and denmark ) do not seem to have done much trading ,well not without an axe in their hand anyway.read' the sagas' and consider the taking of paris and destruction of so much of early english culture.
There is a tendency in scandinavian history to make the vikings appear like pleasant sea going traders ,may i suggest that the facts do not support this .
