In the water .... most of the year!!

This year I have left for pastures new, well at least for the summer months.

My big worry was the cost, especially of fuel whilst cruising. Did I get it wrong!

I have just done a little costing of my cruising so far. Many will know that Little Ship is frugal when it comes to fuel so roughly here are the costings from April.

780 miles less than £800worth of diesel
Use of marinas and the canals in Scotland £1230

Came as a surprise for me I thought that fuel was going to be the higer one....... mind you eating out filling the fun box entertaining ect has probably doubled both of those figures. :)

I'm now on my way back South via Strangford and the Traditional Boat festival in the IoM so that will probably add a load more to the costings :( especially when I meet up with the www.Cruising.ie gang. Beer tokens tend to get expensive with them.

Wow! exscuse my naivety but is that just using the overnight facilities? Also what charges are we talking about for canals? (as i say...please excuse my ignorance :))

He has transitted both the Crinan & Caledonian Canals which charge noticeable fees that include temporary over night stops, marinas are extra. Both organisations no doubt publish their fee structure on their web sites.

He has also been gone a couple of months. Berthing fees can be reduced by anchoring in isolated places - this can also protect the contents of the Fun Box, but significantly restricts social activities. Tom & the gang are sociable beings.

Crinan passage 3 days £90.00
Caledonian passage 1 month £347.00
Portavadie marina 1 month £400.00

All approx but there were other places Crobhe Haven, Oban, Balachullish, Port Ballentyne, East Lock Tarbert ect ect.

Searush is correct using bays ect would reduce the cost but hey.......it's only money :) and in the scope of things it isnt much more than staying in a marina full time. What has surprised me was how little the fuel costs have been in comparisson to the berthing, I was expecting it to be the other way round.

That is a good result Tom.

It would be interesting to see some of the boats on display at the IOM festival, if you get the time to post some pics.
