I'm planning a 2 yr (?) live-aboard N Hemisphere cruise - mainly Europe/Med. But when I look at "Boats for Sale" many of the names dont mean an awful lot to someone from NZ!!. Can anyone help with a good source/reference/site of where I can find out what is a good cruiser and what isnt?? Got a lot of useful help from this forum - keep it up.

that\'s a big question

i don't know of any source of reference that would give you a comparison of all the available types. might be better if you posted a list of the boats available to gou down there and we could give our views.

most production boats have been reviewed over the years in the YBW mags and reprints are available, once you've narrowed it down a bit.

to set the ball rolling, here are a few opinions:

solid criusers suitable for offshore sailing

halberg rassy
oyster
nicholson

lightweights, more suited to coastal and charter

beneteau
dufour
bavaria
legend

and if that doesn't start a riot i don't know what will!

for my own preference i'm not happy about the lumps of lead all these carry around underneath them and they're all one hull short of a proper boat.

enjoy the search.

Thanks for that - I think you have provided a good start point for me. I plan to buy in UK or Europe ( I believe the likes of Spain and Portugal are much cheaper than UK for similar boats!!??) . I know the local (NZ and Australia) boats reasonably well, but dont see too many of them advertised by the European brokers, hence my posting.

I had Moody recommended, but I dont see it in yr list?? Comments!!

Cheers

Another option would be to buy in Europe.
The WWW allows you to compare prices on a lot of production boats.
Anyway, I know of a Nicholson 38 for sale in the Adriatic. It's offered bu the King's Yacht Agency (specialised in Nicholsons but also doing other boats). You can find them on www.kingsyacht.com for a selection of mostly heavier cruising boats, not only for sale in the UK but also in other places worldwide.

cheers

Re: Rather buy in NZ

There was a long posting here awhile back about buying in NZ because the prices were almost half of what they are here. You're also going to get a proven cruising boat that is fully kitted out. The final kitting out will cost you a fortune in the northern hemisphere.
