Cruising on the Danube

I have just finished reading 'An Improbable Voyage', Tristan Jones's account of his 1984 journey accross Europe by river (Main, Danube) - a great book! Has anyone tried to emulate this journey? I assume it must be a lot easier politically since the demise of Communism, but the navigational hazards remain... What are the chances of doing this voyage, and what would be the best boat to do it in?

I think it's been done quite alot of times, but the troubles in Yugoslavia put an end to it for a bit. Would suggest some thing steel with plenty of gun ports would be the best boat!
