I am planning to sail the SW coast of Ireland (Cork to Dingle) next year. In view of many developments I have read about taken and taking place, what is the latest date of publishing of a cruising guide to this area and which one is it - I have found a 2005 edition on Amazon which would make it 5 years away from the then-current situation. Is a new guide in the pipeline? I am aware that Imray will be making a new set of digital charts available next year.

Thanks for your advice
Roger

"Cruising Guide to the Cork and Kerry Coast (Imray Cruising Guide)" by Graham Swanson is very good and a good read. At this stage the ICC guides ("South and West Coasts of Ireland Sailing Directions") are more up to date, and are also excellent.

The sooner you get them the better ...half the fun is in the planning!

SilverBreeze and Snooks,

Thanks for the info. SilverBreeze wins though on price, provided his price is correct? Amazon has this book on offer at £49.50 plus postage - have you a supplier at that price of yours?

I'm not going to do all the work for you ;)

A lot of the anchorages and harbours won't have changed a lot in that time (except Courtmascherry which now has buoyage)

Things you'll have to think about is diesel, it's not that easy to get hold of, likewise water...on your route there are only 5 harbours with marinas (Cork, Kinsale, Laurence Cove, Caherciveen and Dingle)

Getting rid of rubbish can be a problem as well

Places to visit:
Derrynane - The entrance, Glandore (a pint at the Glandore Inn, best pint O guinness we've found), Glengarriff - Scenery, Kinsale - Food, Sherkin Island - The Jolly Roger for some after hours drinks, Dingle - The Chart House restaurant, Castletownshend - Mary Annes restaurant

Have fun

I bought the n and e coast copy, it was in 2003 but it was around half the price amazon suggest.. I think I even bought it in the chandlers.

There are updates on the website which I have transferred over to the book, stuff like telephone numbers and the odd buoyage change.

They are quite canny with the cut off point between the two books, if you are sailing from the UK to go west you probably end up needing both as first landfall will probably be covered by the N & E coast ver.

clever really I suppose.

That's quite bizarre, from www.seachest.co.uk

they state

11th Edition 2006 in preparation now in. Tuskar Rock to Bloody Foreland by way of Fastnet Rock, Cape Clear, Valentia, Shannon and Galway. A fantastic crusing area, so if you are sailing this coast take this pilot with you.

A4 size. 325 pp, numerous colour chartlets and colour photos. Hardback

Is the Irish cruising club playing games with distributors to sell more from their own site and thus scuppering dealers who are left holding old stock?

Sailing Guides to Ireland

I'm delighted to read so many favourable opinions of the ICC Sailing Directions. Visit www.irishcruisingclub.com for the latest information and corrections. Latest editions were published in 2008, available from booksellers and chandlers or Todd Chart Services in Ireland or Imrays elsewhere. We changed our Irish distributor within the last year. If some retailers are still offering out of date copies, that is certainly not with our blessing, and we would be glad to have specific details so that we can follow up - they should have returned any old books for a rebate in December 08. Out of date information is at best frustrating and at worst dangerous, and we take a pride in being up to date. Many retailers' websites advertise older editions, but that doesn't necessarily mean that's what you'd get if you ordered - it just reflects the difficulty of keeping websites current. As for us, corrections and amendments (to September 1 at the time of writing) are available on our website. I'm always happy to receive comments, questions and updates. Thanks again for all the kind comments, good sailing and cead mile failte! Norman Kean, Editor ICC Sailing Directions
