Likewise, at start of season met a lovely couple opposite us on the jetty just taken delivery of their first boat a late 80's early 90's small Sealine. All bubbly and excited about their new hobby. Four weeks later, after not seeing them in the meantime a "For Sale" notice went up on the boat. Eventually saw them late July and he told me that he had s@%t himself so badly trying to moor up in the marina the first time that he didn't want to do it again.

Tried pointing out to him that we had all done that and he shouldn't let it bother him but he was obviously genuinly shook up by it

This guy raced cars for a hobby!!

Re: Why Not Petrol?

I have had two petrol boats and now have a diesel.

Petrol was fine when I started out on the Broads, being on the rivers at tick over speed we hardly used any petrol and was able to refill with cans from the petrol station, as it was much cheaper than from a Marina.

After a season on the rivers, the sea beckoned and suddenly we were using 40 gallons a weekend or more on a planing boat. This was not a problem until we decided we wanted to venture out of our cruising area.

On the first trip from Great Yarmouth to Ipswich we knew that petrol was available at just one Marina on the River Orwell. They had sold out and had not taken a delivery of fuel for the whole week we were there. We had to get my son to drive down with the car and cans and fill up from a petrol station.
The Petrol stations have also started tightening up on the laws of amount of petrol that can be sold in cans and carried in cars.

Since June this year we have put in £850 of diesel, our friends with a petrol boat with almost identical mileage and hours (with a smaller boat & engines) has put in almost £2,500 of petrol.

Diesel is sold at most Marinas, I would never go back to petrol.

Re: Why Not Petrol?

£850 against £2500 a difference of £1650 or put it another way that would be £137 per month on a marine morgage which would equate to about £12K borrowed which might just pay the difference the premium on twin diesels.

I am not saying that petrols are better than diesel - I will almost certainly go diesel myself with my next boat as I hope it will be bigger. What I am saying that the what fuel type question should be considered using the same criteria detailed by others on this thread - ie what type of use do you want to get from the boat. It is not right to just totally discount petrol.

Comment on the differences between petrol and diesel from experiences on Windermere is misleading. Yes petrol is fine on Windermere in a twenty odd ft boat. But try hoiking 100/200 gallons from the nearest supermarket at nearly 5 quid a gallon. Not to mention the massive difference in range.

Don't mention the (Petrol/Diesel) War!

I'm not starting a war. Just dont want folks getting mislead. Plenty of examples of two boats for sale. Petrol 50 grand diesel version 80 grand. It is not without reason.

Not strictly true as I have 40 ft boat and 2x380hp turbos and friend has 27 ft boat 2 X 250hp VP petrol’s.

The real difference saved by changing to diesel is a much larger amount.

Haydn

Thats the point I am making, horses for courses. The first thing to decide is how you want to use the boat. I chose Windermere so petrol was a viable option. Have used the boat plenty this year, but its only 10 miles long so can't really do that many hours without gettin dizzy!! Only spent (so far) £350 on fuel

Likewise if I ever do get to the Med the petrol/diesel arguement disappears because there is no tax free diesel.

If I was on the UK coast though I would probably have put the boat up for sale by now and be looking for an oil burner.

Re: Why Not Petrol?

Yes I agree not STRICTLY true in your case but it is still a valid point for consideration.

Martyn

Sorry Haydn,

I only attached my reponse to your post 'cos it was at the bottom of the pile and was just ment to be a 'o not again' type comment.

I can go on about it all day myself of course, and with no encouragement.

I agree with you entirely, but as I've said before, I'd always buy the £50K petrol boat, and the £30K would buy a very nice pair of new Diesels / drives.

Then for your £80K you have a 15 year old boat with brand new engines and drives, controls and instruments, all under warranty.

When you call back to look at the £80K diesel one still in the sales yard, and glance at the rusty TAMD 41's, and the shot anodes/props on the old 290's, you'll feel as good as if you'd just scored for England.

But!!! We have already established that the bloke wants it on the south coast for OFF SHORE!!??*?!

Haydn,

You source an old diesel lump, and I'll sneak up to Windermere one night and fit it.

Then we've just got to sort out Snelly and Big Al /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

A few weeks ago a S34 with petrols was brought from Liverpool to Windermere. The dealer had taken it as P/x for a new F33 diesel. I would surmise that the owner had had enough of the fuel cost for coastal waters. Likewise I would surmise that the dealer stood the cost of transporting to Windermere because he knew no-one in their right mind would buy it in Liverpool.

Put up for sale for what I considered a way over the top price but was (I believe) sold within a fortnight!!. The buyer was obviously happy to pay the money for his own reasons.

I had a look at the boat but walked away because of the petrols (see I am not that
myopic).

All I am saying is horses for courses

NM I'll be getting a reputation for being awkward and argumentative

I know that now but I hadn't read all of the thread when I posted my first comment!

Why didn't you point it out then and we could have done something else this afternoon :-).

Martyn

What a good point Martyn.

The other thing is with it being petrol the hull has possibly got much less wear and tear than the diesel equivelent due to lower hours (because the fuel is too expensive)

This has genuinely made me think about what I should consider next.
