Cruising Association

Seconded.

We've attended quite a few talks, and found most of them enjoyable and well presented. Also the local section puts on some good events. We're about to try one of their training courses - the price to members is certainly well below normal training rates.

For those away from CA house, getting more involved in the local section could be a benefit - if there isn't a local section, start one!

Perhaps they suss out 'volunteers' before enlisting their services, Nigel? After all, one look at Super Anne would make anyone hesitate. Didn't you published pics aground a few yards from base? - that's hardly likely to impress anyone looking for local knowledge! Who could rely on you to mediate in a dispute with the yard after those arguments over poor rigging and bad mooring? And you've dismissed the nearest hostelry - because SWMBO didn't like the decor!

The CA, like any organisation, has to protect its reputation. It is hardly likely to welcome anyone who consistently abrogates structure, rules, responsibility and formality in public.

Mind you, I bet they wouldn't refuse your cheque!!

1. World class library, suitable for planning cruises anywhere in the world, with almost complete world wide cover of charts and pilot books.

2. Cabins at £25 for a single while you're doing your cruise research or going to the boat show down the road at Excel (book ahead for the boat show!)

3. Local Reps scattered all over the globe

4. Updates and corections to pilot books available on line, usually a year before they're incorporated in Imray's site (for which they are a major source)

5. Marina, Insurance, Publication and other discounts

No. You're not missing much. For all it's faults (those of an organisation run largely by volunteers, who, because of their age, do die off with as great a frequency as other change jobs) I'm still better off paying my £120 than not. But then, I have lived aboard for many years. Perhaps that's the difference? It doesn't offer enough for UK residents, it's a club for longer distance cruisers?

Check out p52 of the December Cruising mag from CA

'Nigel Luther, an English businessman and yachtsman living in Ventspils had contacted the CA to offer assistance to visiting yachtsmen and has now taken on the role of HLR for Ventspils, Pavilosta and Liepaja'

There's also a frightening mugshot
