Cruising Association - Nice guys or No?

Re:Limehouse arrival

Mirelle, your post hasn't appeared on forum but sent to me direct.Sounds like fun. System has changed a bit since then. Club now holds warrant and isues non expiring permits to members. Got my bloo cause it was cheaper to get it from club secretary than buy red of similar size and quality from shop!!!! Also have dark blue hull so looks pretty. Still haven't 100% mastery of astern in the old girl yet, so plenty of fodder for those given to scrutinizing the arrival of others into tight berths. Just hope they remember to put out plenty of fenders!!! I always do.

Alive and well, thank you

Not in jail yet...but give it time......

Yep - I'm still around, but not often. Life is full of stuff. Good to talk to you too.

Just to put an alternative view, it depends on what you expect to find from a potential club. Why would you not consider joining a normal Yacht Club? There are many to chose from in the Solent and around Hamble where I think you keep your boat. A local club will provide a social, racing and cruising programme and may have moorings too. The CA premises are in London and you may never visit there unless maybe you want to use the library for a major cruise plan. The local CA groups mostly use Yacht Clubs for their get togethers and usually the local YC members are invited too.

Associations like the CA and owners associations do not expect anything much of you, you can join in or not to any extent you chose. YCs expect you to be more actively involved in club activities whether that be dinghy racing, cruiser racing, cruiser cruising or whatever as well as the social side. The YC will have a local clubhouse at least, probably with a nice bar and maybe a restaurant and may also have moorings for members at preferential rates.

Or you could of course join both.

Thanks all for the postings everyone.

Robin, actually the reason I was looking to join is because I was going to be working in London for a few months near Limehouse and fancied somewhere to go for lunch and meet people who sail (worried about withdrawal symptoms from being away from the coast for too long!).

I take your point about local clubs and am a happy member of one currently, although I have to say, probably the most unfriendly, self-important and unpleasant group of people I've ever met in one place were the members of a certain other local YC which I went to as a guest and am pleased I never joined. Hence the post - I didn't want to join the CA to find out after the event that it was like that !

I joined the CA for exactly the same reasons when they were based in St Katherines Dock and I was working nearby. Tremendous value and a thoroughly nice bunch of people. Can't reccomend it highly enough. Added value if you are close to the CA HQ. The library, chart room, etc are fascinating. Ask for Lorna and say I sent you.
