Cruising Association Developing?

I was one who joined and left after a year. That was 6 years ago.

I have just received the email about a new PR officee. It is adressed "Dear members"

No organisation gets things 100% right 100% of the time and the CA is no different. However, the CA does recognise that it needs to change and improve, hence the very real request for a press and publicity officer.

You don't have to be a member to apply, see http://www.cruising.org.uk/node/21199.

Indeed. While I was a member, the membership system didn't work. They left me off the membership list, for example - even after reissuing it.

I wonder if they sent the email I just got to all ex-members? Is anyone checking? I'm sure I'll get an apology soon...

When I was ex-communicated (did not renew my membership) about a month ago access to the CA website was just stopped when my membership ended. No thank you for being a member, no feed back form on why I left .. just nothing.

Now I also received the same e-mail starting off "Dear member".

My biggest gripe about the CA was that you were merely a membership number and not a person. You paid your money and was constantly told to put information in.
The CA could be so much more.

There are some wonderful volunteers who work so hard for free on behalf of the members and there is excellent information to be gained.

I do feel like it lost it's direction a little but hopefully the new boss is trying to rectify this and get it back on track.

There have been some major changes in the last year which are all good. The website is so much better and the CA as a whole is making positive steps forward.
It is not perfect as they have so many groups to look after but it is going in the right direction.

Is it right for you... a free month would help decide but unless that happens why not join and see.

I also have to say that the above is purely a personal view for someone who may be far to critical. I have met other members who think the CA is amazing. A bit like the "AA". Membership does not seem worth it until you have a problem. Then it is worth it's weight in gold.

You're right. The system could best be described 6 years ago as dysfunctional. Robin Knox Johnston was then asked if he could serve as President, and accepted the challenge. As the current president recently quoted, "rotweilers" were appointed to stop the money drain and sort things out. They did a very good repair, but it took three years to pay off debts. Now CA is going through the investment phase to improve services and communications.

Hmm. Yes. Speaking as a Council Member of the CA, Sorry about that.

One of the jobs of the new recruit is to sort out the various email lists to remove duplicates, and to ensure that all lists allow "unsubscribe".
