Seeing as the weather is going to trash another weekend opportunity to air the canvas, I thought I would share some thoughts on destinations based on our cruise at the end of last season. We did the Northern part of the area this time so it will be the turn of the Blackwater/Crouch area later on this year (meteo permitting). If anyone did that area last year, please pitch in.

Ore: Jolly Sailor still ahead of the rest. Entrance OK but exit a real pain if you need to head S again with some tide, fine if heading N as you can come out on HW. We've decided it's neaps only now.

Deben: New shower block at Tide Mill now best on the coast. Kings Head, Woodbridge and Ramsholt Arms excellent. Maybush consistent and reasonable. Entrance challenging but did not feel as dangerous on exit as the Ore. Another neaps only for us this year.

Orwell: Butt & Oyster still retains charm in front bar and snugs even though part of a chain. Staff changes, but service good. Ye Olde Ship, Levington excellent - best of the week. Lightship v good. Who is that woman behind the counter at the SYH office? Unbelievably miserable - as a visitor puts me off the place.

Stour: Shotley v efficient. Showers rubbish and all were cold except handhelds in the baths in the bertholders block but understand refurbishment has occurred over the winter. Bristol Arms friendly and very good value food. Shipwreck underwhelming. Wish laundry had longer hours. Excellent Wifi - see elsewhere on forum.

Backwaters: Ship and Red Lion at Kirby both still good - Ship has the edge on food, Red Lion on beer. WFYC improved - new steward who is young and well clued up, going places. Food pretty good also. Harbour Lights - regret Little Chef analogy still valid, and no getting away from the electric piano music, even when the pianist is not there! However, Fernando is back, which is a relief and the beer is still £2.50 and there are choices other than Green Thing. White electricity cards for the pontoons are troublesome - 50% of ours did not work.

Happy planning, or whatever else you are doing this weekend. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Would agree with your views on Deben vs Ore... the Deben entrance feels 'safer'...

OK.... Bradwell... a bit 'in the middle of nowhere' so not an ideal cruising destination, other than the fabulous Green Man, which makes it worth a visit in its own right... good food, and brilliant beer...

West Mersea.... great place to stop... a real 'must do', and several places to eat ashore.... the Company shed is an essential

Brightlingsea.... not walk ashore, but still excellent... the pubs are less appealing, and the food choices somewhat limited, apart from the world class Indian, the Kovolam.... a superb destination for a quite early or late season stop...

The Crouch.... unmissable... a wide choice of moorings, or the marina if you prefer.... vast choice of pubs, and several decent eateries... a real yachting centre that shouldn't be missed... or carry on further up the river to various destinations...

Maybe turn out of the Crouch into the Roach, and anchor for the night.. tender ashore to Foulness island, and walk the mile or so to the George and Dragon... a complete timewarp... with a lovely local feel... don't expect haute cuisine... but OK food at exceptional prices, and a lovely warm welcome...

When you come to the Blackwater by all means visit Bradwell (the middle of nowhere is why us Bradwellians like it) but also go further up river (and you Morgana!) - pick up a buoy at Stone or anchor off Osea Island. The river is lovely past Osea. If you don't draw too much then you'll get alongside the quay or alongside a Thames Barge at Maldon where the Jolly Sailor does good food and beer.

Given up trying to plan anything, I think the work is cursed have made ***** for the last three weekends made a **** for this one also and have gone no where.

I must say Roger anything further than Osea Island looks pretty scary lots and lots of green bits and red numbers

BTW hope yur hol was good

Holiday was excellent thanks Neville. Drawing a meagre 1.7m I can get up to Maldon on the tide but not all the way to the quay. Some do. You'd get up past Heybridge.

Soon be out there. Forecast for next Thursday 18c and wall-to-wall sunshine. Polish on stand-by /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

And there are other possibilities above Osea. Heybridge Basin is quite an experience and I started cruising there in the 70s. There is reasonable water in Maylandsea creek, though a 5' keel will ground at springs. When it is blowing it is more comfortable to anchor off Northey Island just off the channel than at Osea where it can get bouncy and there are some hard patches with weed and boats can drag.

I know a few members at Marconi Sailing Club & have always found the folk there very friendly and hospitable.

When their downstairs bar is open (The Dell?? & usually on a Fri) they fly a large gin pennant so you know if it is worth launching the dinghy!!
