Really am sympathetic to the problem but much of Londons accomodation will have some sort of lease/ground rent lurking underneath the freehold.
You may have bought the bricks but the land belongs to the Crown/Church/ investment company, all who want their pound of flesh.
The lease market can be very lucrative as some tenants find out when any new owner starts wanting a return on his probably highly leveraged investment.
Bit difficult to explain why some should be immune ?
