Crossing the North Sea

Can't claim to be an expert on EN grammar, but wasn't it an indirect interrogative sentence?
Anyway, judging from your smiley, I guess you're not so naive after all, and you know the answer perfectly... :D

I did Ipswich to blankenberge, Belgium then up to vlissingen, holland. We then went inland a bit to middle burg and zierikzee. There were other places but I can't think of them.
We had a great time. The crossings were un eventful. Shipping lanes no problem.
I think Ipswich to blankenberge takes the shipping lanes near enough to 90 degs.

We used a plotter but we still had a chart at the helm to mark off 15 min lat longs. I feel you can cover 5 miles give or take a bit in 15 mins. This is enough. any more and it may cause a problem for anybody looking for you if you need help.

Thanks for the positive feedback on the Blog - Paul Sallis and Tender Aft. Sorry I haven't replied sooner but have been away and out of range of WIFI for a few days. In answer to one question:

Our boat is a Trader 42 launched in 2008. She has twin Cummins QSB 5.9 giving 420 hp each. We normally cruise at 8 to 10 kts but increase to 12 to 14 kts when in beam seas. This gives better stability at the expense of considerably worse fuel consumption. She is pretty highly specd including aircon, heating, paserelle, bow and stern thrusters, Sat TV, etc, etc. The only problems we had over the 2300nm cruise were a defective macerator and a leak from the "dripless" stern glands that gave us a bit of a fright but was easily put right. After 25 years of planing boats we are pretty happy with a slower pace in a semi displacement hull.

PM me if you want a chat.

Richard.

Pen!! I'd have got a right telling off from Alison Noice had I used a pen on a chart.

I took a friend with me who was the ex navigator commander of the RY Britannia. He had to write in pen as it was the only instrument to Gand after all the lights went out and the stabilisers failed. After I managed to get control back he stood by the helm seat and announced to attention. "reporting with sword and medals sir", I said what are you on about, he replied that due to the situation the only means of recovering the position on the chart was with pen and I abjectly apologise for having so done. So yes Ben, writing on the chart in pen is a court marshal offence. ;)
