Crossing Pwllheli to Arklow

The first time visitor to Arklow generally lies onto the pontoons in the river, the showers are quite good,
The river is has a very small tidal range 4 or 5 foot at the most

There is now a shopping centre 5 minutes walk from the pontoon/marina

If you give me a call I'll show you around.. (for a better pint)

I will agree that the river is badly polluted, (sewage) please sign the petition on the sea scout website .http://www.arklowseascouts.ie/

He asked to go to Arklow. You're sending him 70 miles in the opposite direction!!!!!

He also said he was armchair sailing, and it looked like a good mini cruise of the East Coast ports of Ireland, so I dont think anything was fixed in stone.

For some reason... in 30 years of sailing the Irish Sea, I'm pretty sure I never went into Arklow.... almost certainly based on previous experience of various crew and skippers.

Arklow Charts

Admiralty Chart 1787 of 2005 shows the 7 turbines of the windfarm. There is also a metmast close to the southern most turbine and another metmast approx 0.8miles south of the North Arklow cardinal mark.

The red porthand Arklow No1 and No2 marks have been removed.

The South Arklow cardinal mark and the Arklow LANBY have been removed and replaced by a superbuoy.

While the harbour area has suffered due to the economic downturn and closure of longstanding industries improvements are being made.
The quay on the southside above the dock entrance has been sheetpiled and resurfaced. The NE side of the dock has also been sheetpiled and resurfaced.
The Harbour Commissioners are awaiting permission to dredge the area and plan to install marina berthing in the dock basin.

Berthing rates have changed from the £6 per night/per week but are around E10 a night. You can get a shower in the lifeboat house but it is definitely not a shed.

The long pontoons on the N side of the river are part of Arklow Marina Ltd. complex. The sailing club pontoon is approx 12 metres and for use of club launch and rib.
Some guides/almanacs mention a visitors mooring but this facility was withdrawn when the marina opened.

Most rowing clubs in Cardigan bay have been to Arklow for the Celtic Challenge race to Aberwyswyth and I am sure they would be happy to advise you on the passage.

Hope you will make the trip this summer and you will more than welcome.
