hello,

Planning to cross over with my RIB (Capelli 770 WA / 250 HP Yamaha) from Saint Tropez to Corse. Any one else planning to do this? Would be fun (and comforting for my wife) to do this together. Cruising speed will be around 25 kts.
Please let me know if you are planning a trip around this date.

Thanks

Dan

Wind and wave direction changes often .
Passageweather - reasonably accurate .
N corse often windy
I would not do it in an open Rib , nor would want to accompany anyone in one -highly probable we would compromise our own safety - end up towing you or something

But others more optimistic will be along soon
Aside I would be gunning it nearer 30 knots -to get to land quicker
And would have drilled crew in life raft / ERIB deployment earlier.

Sorry I can not be more constructive

Good luck

Experience wise can I enquire ?
Have you rib ed it Poquerolles at all ?

thanks for your reply. I've been sailing around this area for 20 years now. Just not crossed over directly with this boat. My previous boat was a Princess 60, this boat feel much safer and more sea worthy. Yes we were at Porquerolles too, it's great. Thanks. Dan

I agree with Porto, crossing in a small rib is foolhardy. I have done this crossing several times in a tall ship and in a mates 50ft fairline. The weather can change quickly and every time I have done it encountered rough stuff unexpectedly. When the weather changes the fetch is long in all directions so the wave heights build quickly. You will be rattled to bits trying to take that on at 30 knots. A better option would be to fly or ferry in to ajacccio and drive up to Porto on the west coast. This is a nice little harbour village with family run hotels over looking a small harbour that is full of rental ribs of all sizes for hire. Rent one of these for a few days, the scandola nature reserve is on your door step with the lovely little village of girolata just around the corner.

thanks. The boat is nearly 8 meter. has a spare engin (15HP Yamaha). It has a cabin, we sleep on it during the holiday. I've been sailing and motoring all around the world (Virgin Island, North Sea, Black Sea, Mediterranean). But thanks for your advice.

Just under 100nm ,a fair distance in a small boat, but no doubt others will have gone further in smaller boats ( these guys covered significant distances in a boat smaller and less seaworthy than your rib https://youtu.be/VssvWvtD0EA) pick your weather window well and take the right precautions and youll be ok. Its easy to say dont risk it, but wheres the fun in that.

Let us know how you get on ,as the owner of a 7.7m boat id be interested to hear how it went.

Perfectly doable imo, you have spare engine and experience, add vhf with big antenna, and epirb, and look for a long enough time slot with a good forecast on passageweather or Lama, and windfinder. Companion boat is always nicer to have. Enjoy the trip !!!
