The Channel 4 series "Going to Extremes" features Glo Carpenter's attempt to sail 2,700 miles across the Atlantic with her friend Bob Kerr tonight (Thu 12/6) at 8:00pm. It's been well trailered so apologies if you already knew about it.

Yeh, me too! Flaked out to watch and got an eyeful of uninteresting local crap from down here in Devon. Still, just had a good laugh watching the Atlantic Antics!! Glad they got there safely though.

Must have been a hell of a tight fit when you consider a camera man (at least) in addition to the crew.

Anybody recognise the boat? I think it was a Beni, but what length? Seemed big compared to my boat!!

Cheers

Absolutely agree, I thought he was an awful skipper. A good skipper should never need to shout like that. If he gives clear and confident direction, the crew are less likely to mess up. I wouldn't go on a ferry with him, let alone a crapped yacht for three weeks!

And speaking as a female sailor...what a sexist prig!

We wondered about the camera crew too.

His orders for a spinnaker drop were a little unclear i thought. He was telling Glo to release the halliard. Then he told her to pull it in. SHe not un-naturally pulled the halliard when what he meant was for her to go forward and help recover the kite.

I was always taught that if you brief the crew properly during a manouver you needn't say another word and that if it goes wrong you didn't explain it properly.

Ironic really when his defination of a skipper was someone who could coach and develop the crew then "police" them.

Also her role for a co-owner was odd. More the obedient wife from the 19th century than an equal partner.

Aw come on, they made 50 minutes of TV from almost 4 weeks of sea time. Surely he wouldn't be human if he hadn't shouted now and again, makes good TV to include it all in the programme. I would like to bet the others also shouted on occasions.

Not defending him, they should have had a rota for the galley and kept the cabin in better order.

Yes, where was the camera person, at first thort it was one of them but couldn't have been.

There were 5 of them on board, bob and glo, the young guy who they decribed at deckhand and 2 others who's roles where never really explained. Where they camera crew??

<hr width=100% size=1>

There was the bloke the skipper recruited who worked with him so don't think he was the camera man, so it must have been the fifth man! (or woman)

Rolling, rolling, rolling keep them doggies moving!
Where’s me chuck wagon gone?

I want to know why he seemed so scared to let go of the tiller, seemed to be on a total power trip to me, no wonder the first two stepped down.

It looked like a really boring boat.

And what was with 4 on 4 off when they had 4 crew, what a ridiculous rota to keep people tired and ratty.

I was wondering why they had it pulled out in the yard. Do you have more detail?

No. I went on the Channel 4 chatroom after the programme appeared and a friend of theirs was there. The friend had a Bennie 32s5 which they had been on so they decided to buy one for the crossing. He didn't elaborate on the rudder situation, but as you say it had been removed and they were looking at it at the end of the programme.

Re: Glo - what a woman

Wasn’t Glo a real character? 64 years old and she jumps into the Atlantic mid way across for a swim and what stoic manning of the galley!

Glo and the younger (transatlantic) guy were the only participants I could tolerate as long-term crew.

The skipper made some odd calls such as electing to go 6 up from Brighton to the Canary Is on a 32 footer. He should also feel ashamed that Glo did not have an opportunity to pick up more general sailing skills in such a long voyage.

The camera work was excellent, I cannot remember seeing a TV program that conveyed so well the reality of offshore sailing in a small yacht. I am personally fed up of Grand Prix sailing and yacht icebreaker exploring.
