Cross Channel from Weymouth or Portland

I don't need pics of Portland Bill - or the Race - as I have seen both up close, last count 24 crossings but that's because I used to cross every year at least once but health has been a snag lately - this is my 40th season with my A22 though I've had other boats like a Carter 30 and up until recently always a fast dinghy too.

I was mentioning the apparent laissez faire about just simply setting off from Weymouth and / or Portland saying The Race is not an issue and can be ignored...

This would not be good should a novice read it - and believe me I've seen this happen; in St Helier marina we were approached by a guy, on the lines of ' scuse me, can you teall me how to navigate ? ' - No BS.

He'd been out from Plymouth on mate's fishing boats so knew Guernsey was ' over there ' - and bought an old twin engine mobo, how hard could it be ?

He soon found out, the wind built up and swell increased, knobbling his only nav aid, an ancient radar.

They were detected and and saved by a French warship just before they interfaced with Northern Brittany, taken into port, dusted off and given a course for St Peter Port, Guernsey the next day.

As they trundled along the skipper - he had wife and young children aboard - spotted an island to his starboard and thought " Aha, that's where I've been going wrong, the compass is out ! " so went straight for it.

It wasn't until he'd been tied up a while before someone informed him he was attached to Jersey and must have gone straight over Les Manquieres rock plateau - which is where we came in at the marina - sadly the story didn't end there, it was rather difficult getting back the charts, compass and waterproofs we'd loaned them.

All the above is true, which is why I was especially annoyed by the apparent disdain for Portland Race; there really are people out there who'd try it on a jetski or paddleboard...

Seajet, no one who has posted on this thread has expressed any disdain for the Portland Race.

How about a compromise?

1. We all admit that the race would have a bearing on departure times if your destination was, say, Treguier (to take LW395's example), as you would want to go through the race because your final destination is west of the line going due south of the tip of Portland Bill.

2. You agree that, on a passage from Weymouth or Portland to (say) Cherbourg you would want to avoid going through the race by setting off on a course that ensured that you wouldn't. Assuming that objective is achieved, it wouldn't really matter what time you left Portland or Weymouth from the perspective of tides in the Portland Race, because you have deliberately avoided it.

If everyone agrees to this, I will feel encouraged to take on mediation between the US and North Korea....... :)

Angele,

course AND more importantly tide time to avoid The Race !

Now either you nuke Fat Boy Not So Slim or I'll take out a few well deserving people here...:)

Quite fancy any one of these on the foredeck for settling any harbour dues disputes; seems it should be standard fit around Sutton Harbour, and wouldn't do any harm in certain other places I can think of...

To all others who posted on this thread. Sorry, guys! At least I tried. I'll stick to something easier. Like persuading Donald Trump that climate change is real.

Agreed, your sequencing wasn't quite right. Warm yourself up with Mr T, then the Weymouth tides, after that North Korea...

and if you are successful

and I kind of suspect you will be

you can tackle the question of steel yacht safety :D:D

Does the race impose any particular limitations on departure times when heading cross channel rather than going West?

I always use the East Shambles cardinal buoy as my start line, whether night or day, I pass close-to with it on my starboard if a channel flood and a mile east of it if a channel ebb, just watching cross track error

You couldn't have a better jumping off point for crossing the western channel than Portland.

Have a god crossing.
