Crosby chain connectors

Crosby chain connectors are no longer being manufactured. These are the ones Vyv Cox recommends. I have used one on two combined chains for about 8 years and have had no problems. They are of much better quality than the cheap stainless ones available now which I personally would not trust.

However, there are still some around. I have just imported two 5/16ths from the US (8mm).

I don't think there are any 5/16ths ones left in the UK so you will need to be quick to import a spare for your bosuns locker.

I feared that was happening when Tecni and Flint no longer stocked 8 mm ones, only 10 mm. West Marine did an equivalent range but I do not know if they still do. When I wanted to buy some for testing the shipping cost was $70.

If you live near Leeds it may be that Lifting Safety still hold some but they will not mail order less than £100.

I have a stainless steel link at 8 meters so I can loose the anchor without having to hack saw the chain. Sods law says things will go wrong at the most inconvenient time, at night and with the weather kicking, so it's a quick release system requiring just some molegrips etc.

Maybe one of these ''maillons rapides'', sometimes people here use them between anchor and chain; not sure how it passes over the gypsy though

I use these but not on an anchor chain. Not sure they would pass through a windlass.

Photo below by roberto. I pull my anchor and all chain by hand. One day perhaps I will not be able to but until then I will continue the exercise.
