Hi all
Wanted to extend my 40 metre 8mm chain to 60 metres using a crosby 8mm c link cos of good specs. Also recommended by Vyv whose opinion I respect. Trouble is it has different dimensions to my 8mm chain and I had to file it to get it on at all. I fear even now it will stick in my Lofrans Airon windlass fitted with a gypsy for 8mm chain although havent actually tested it yet. Tempted to remove it and look for another solution. Any thoughts?

Oh that's worrying. I have a 10mm Crosby link that I'm intending to use on my chain to add 20m but I can't decide whether to bin the 10mm and replace with one 100m 8mm length. If the Crosby link is going to be a pain then that's another reason to spend the money on all new chain.

Sorry I can't add any comfort to your issue....

Unfortunately the Crosby links are made to an American specification that doesn't quite match the DIN one of the chain. It is not unusual to need a slight amount of fettling to get them to fit. However, I have never heard of one that would not go through a windlass. Before I did all the testing I had a chain with three C-links in it. Two were the same size as a Crosby but one was far bigger, perhaps USA G43 size. All of them passed through both the windlasses I have owned with no trouble at all.

I'm afraid there are no metric equivalents that I am aware of with anything like the same strength.

I don't know much about Imperial 3/8" chain but if its dimensions are close to 10 mm ISO the Crosby should be OK. Dimensions on the website.
Thanks, it would only be used in dire circumstances when i would not want any chance, however remote, of it jamming. I think I will stick to Plan A of splicing some warp onto the chain.
Apols to op for o/t drift

I extended our 8mm chain using a Crosby Link earlier this year- no problem with the Lewmar Windlass Gypsy.
We did previously have a problem with the warp splice to chain jamming in the Gypsy.

Had exactly the same problem, the end of the new chain was fine, the existing calibrated chain didn't fit easily and now needs the attention of a 7lb lump hammer.

Thanks guys
The diameter of the link was obviously greater than that of the 8mm DIN chain paricularly at each end of the link. I filed the link first which allowed me to attach it but did not allow full freedom of movement with the adjacent links of the chain.I was worried that because of this the chain would stick in the windlass. Your experience on this point is reassuring . I guess I need to try it out because as Storyine says I'm only likely to be using my last 20 metres in extreme conditions
