I'm trying to buy unbreakable crockery WITHOUT a nautical theme. All the usual local & online chandlers only stock ones with either schooners, knots, flags or rope patterns.

Any idea where I (or rather SWMBO...) can buy plain, non-boaty plates & bowls??

Makro have some sets 6 of each plates, side plates, bowls & mugs going for £25 plus the dreaded VAT at the moment. I saw them today.

This may sound rather obvious but on my last boat i used unbreakable glass crockery. you could drop it hit it - it was ubreakable and served us well for several years untill a fateful night when we were struck by a rogue wave off the Scillies which took away spray hood dodgers and washed harnessed helmsman overboard .The entire set for 6persons shattered into millions of tiny very sharp fragments in the impact. Incidently we thought the probable cause for the wave was a passing submarine. Avoid both glass crockery and passing submarines

Thank you all for your help. Maybe putting my kids on submarine watch will keep them amused this summer...

Good idea - I find that Woollies and Morrisons are the cheapest places for DIY and cleaning bits. e.g. A giant sponge at Morrisons - 0.39p. Local chandler £1.99 and it's smaller!

It is not a positive rule that boat crockery must be unbreakable..I hate eating off, or drinking from, plastic. So I dont. Proper china mugs, real china plates, and decent glasswear on my boat. In fifteen years I have broken or chipped three glasses and two mugs. Good stowage is the answer, but not to your question. ;)

Like you, we hated the tacky stuff stocked by many chandlers. We bought much better quality unbreakable tableware at, of all places, the London Boat Show. A German company called WACA, with about six complete design ranges, only one with a boaty motif. The UK retailer is Waca UK, 97 High Street, Dymchurch, Kent TN29 0NW, tel 01303 873784.

Thanks for the help. We somehow managed to miss them at the LBS...!

We also prefer china, so we have two sets, china one for when we are at rest and a plastic set for use at sea.

That would mean I have more crockery at sea than I do at home!!

SWMBO would insist on the latest Royal Doulton to redress the balance...This could get expensive.

Seriously, just ordered some nice (non-boaty) melamine from Waca.

German lady at Beaulieu Boat show last week had the Galleyslave(.co.uk) range which might be want you were after (without nautical theme). Really good unbreakable glass ware stuff also.

Thanks for the info. We ended up buying some of the stuff from WACA (see above). Looks good at the moment but only time will tell.

Welcome to the forum.
