Hi All,

I have booked a charter cat (444) via Sunsail for next August. We will join the yacht in Agana (Croatia) and as this is the first time we have chartered a yacht, I was looking for some advice. Firstly, any top-tips would be gratefully received (we are sailing with 4 adults and 5 children (age 3-11) - I have limited sail experience although I do hold RYA Day Skipper (sail), but do have a reasonable amount of powerboat experience (various craft). Secondly, does anybody have a suggested itinerary. We have the yacht from Saturday to Saturday.

Thanks in advance.

That is a really big boat - 24 foot across! Our smaller cat was in Agana for 5 years and you are starting from one of the best places to see the islands.

There are many threads on Croatia and Jim B's site http://www.jimbsail.info// , amongst them on YBW one by me on the different mooring methods you might come across in Croatia.

If I name some of the main places you might think about you can search for them

Skradin / Krka Falls
Vis
Bisevo / Blue Grotto
Korcula
Trogir
Split
Hvar
Primosten
Milna

There's more there than you can see in a week and I haven't mentioned the Kornatis which is doable in a week but not really very interesting for children.

Come back on here if you have any further questions after looking at what is already available.

Welcome to the forum.

Have you thought of buying or borrowing a Croatia pilot book ? I found it very useful a few years ago but would definitely recommend the S falls mentioned in previous post it's a great place to sail and would mention Trogir as worth a visit if you have time by sea or by land

Another question does come to mind. At the time of year we are going (1st week August), i imagine very busy - should we book into Marinas ahead of time or would we be likely to 'just turn up'??

Hi Duffa,

I was in Croatia in May this year and found the Sunsail briefing very useful as their long term forecast gave us a chance to do the "windward" islands before strong Westerlies moved in later in the week so we were safely on the looard side of the islands when it got a bit lively. Marinas seem to have a lot of space and they fit people in where they can. Flotillas can be a pain as they take over big chunks of the marinas and spend the early hours talking, singing and generally carousing. One marina had a load of Germans (I think) who were still singing at two in the morning, complete with accordion, mouth organ and guitar, cheerfully murdering "Blue Suede Shoes". The wee 'uns need their sleep. I was also surprised to find that the "Town Quays" that I moored at were far quieter than I imagined they would be. You may want to leave Trogir until the day before you have to get back as it is well worth a visit and for the ladies, there are shops!!!! From there Agana is a short hop. Not sure about the lifejacket situation as my crew are well trained and we asked for them. There was a bit of a blank looks when we asked for LJs that actually fitted as it is rare that they are worn on charter boats. Maybe ask Sunsail in advance for the right size for the nippers. Yes, I know that it is easy sailing around these islands but I did see one 38 footer broach because the people on board were being 'macho' so maybe the RNLI and the RYA have a point. They also ripped a spinnaker and snapped the pole. Deposit gone on that one I think! Get the pilot book if you can. 777 ports, v. useful and a large scale chart for winter evening planning. The charts on my charter vessel were v. good. Have fun !!

Yes, it will be very busy but you should get into a marina although no harm in phoning ahead. Details in 777 which you will have onboard. If you anchor use mooring buoys or the town quay in places like Hvar, Milna, Bol you have to get there before 2pm to have any chance of finding a slot. However, there are plenty of anchorages which will often look pretty busy when you arrive at say 4pm or 5pm after but will start to empty at around 6pm as many boats, mainly mobos, head for marinas.
