Crinan canal

the prices of the cally and the f and c are making me consider if it is worth doing the trip and filming it. I have cycled the F and C - nothing special.

I have driven along the cally - I assume if the wind is in the wrong direction is it quite an uphill schlep

once those waves tart building in loch ness it looks pretty horrible for a 22 footer with an outboard

2009 did the exact same trip. Going SW the wind was hard against me all day, so tied alongside and went down Loch Ness
overnight in the pitch black, except for occasional house light or car headlights sweeping over the loch.
Was the scariest trip I have ever done. At one point I could see Nessie in my wake.

Crinan Canal -- I decided the thick weed would clean my weedy hull. Bad idea!

I'm heading west from the Clyde in a week, but will only use the canal if I absolutely have to. I resent the cost and I resent the filthy ring round my hull. Round the Mull it is, if at all possible.

We had an 8 day pass for the Caley in May, it was £158 IIRC for an 8m Centaur. We went Corpach to Inverness and back. We took too long on the outward leg so motored into the wind all the way back. If you are only going one way you should have time to beat into the prevailing south westerlys. You can whistle through in 2.5 days if you don't hang about.

There is a discount for the return trip, that would be £125 IIRC.

I have crewed many times through the Crinan but never taken my own boat through, I doubt I ever will now.

I'd urge all to please complete the survey mentioned earlier in the thread. Scottish canals say they are listening and the current assisted scheme is a pilot which they may change back if the demand is high enough.

Their argument for the currecnt scheme is 1 - they says that's what the customers said they wanted and 2 - people paying for assisted were getting upset when non paying boats went though with them.

My argument is if you want something extra you have to pay for it like everything else in life ... the current scheme is likened to forcing everyone to travel "first class" when economy suits most.

At present they have lost my business and wont be using the canal again until the revert to assisted as an option extra and revert the prices to something more reasonable. The best part of £300 for a 10m yacht is a big jump in the holiday budget.
