Any advice on which crimpers ( for electrics not hair) to buy? Need a set for car repairs but just looking for a reliable set to add to boat tool collection. Toolstation was my likely source but I'm sure the collected forum wisdom of those involved in marine electronics might be worth canvassing . Clearly want to keep to say sub 40 BP though ideally but thought a few crimps might be useful on board investment for future .

Look for the crimps you are likely to want to use first then find a set of crimpers designed for them that look sturdy and will crimp those crimps firmly closed until they hit the stops. Crimpers that flex when you use them, that try and be cutters and strippers as well as crimpers or that try and fit a huge range of crimp sizes without interchangeable dyes are unlikely to be the best you can get. £40 will get you a good pair of crimpers.

What I have found since the advent of the heat shrink style crimp connectors, is when using thin wire and said reds quite often the wire can still pull out, this is due to the heat shrink material being of a thinner section than the old hard plastic type.

So after several plier types all of which did not cut the mustard I bought a pair of Snap on PWSC7CF, they have been used a lot and still do the job, best of all they have a narrow nose so when space is tight you can still get in there, think I paid circa 40/45 a couple of years ago, bound to be some 2nd hand ones on ebay.

I got a very reasonable ratchet crimper from the tool stall that used to be at the top end of the Gosport High Street Market some years ago. I am not sure if it's still there.

I have reasonably expensive crimping tools for work, but for on the boat i keep a pair of Draper ratchet crimpers, such as the ones below, double check for the best price ;

I've also got Draper which are reasonable quality and have interchangeable anvils? They give a reliable result and are reasonably priced.

Just to add yo the list.

I'm rewiring a boat this winter and have found the Laser Tools brand for both wire strippers and crimpers for around £25 each are working fine.

If you intend crimping any heavy duty cable for the starter or battery systems then you’ll need a set of hydraulic crimpers. The bright yellow, 10ton crimper I bought for under £25 from ebay, easily handles cables from 4mm up to 70mm^2.

Assuming not battery cables, there are 3 different types. The non insulated terminal type that fold the tags over is one. Then the insulated terminal types there are the shrink and non shrink terminal types. They are very similar but different, make sure you have the right one. Any of the ratchet ones should be fine.
Vehicle wiring products and 12v planet are 2 good suppliers.
