I was just talking to a friend in Nidri who said that there has been a bit of a crime wave in the area. Apparently a sail boat was pinched from Tranquil Bay, money was pinched from a car while the guy was changing a flat tyre. Various cash machines have been done and other robberies.

I understand that it is not just the imegrant population that are responsible. i.e. locals!

Anyone know any more?

Two kiosks broken into, plus a few cars in Sami, three Bulgarians arrested, caught in the act, they even broke into cars at Patras before catching the ferry to Sami. Also rumours of Italian youths on holiday attempting to steal laptops and cameras from tourists.
Nothing new in August, it happens every year with the influx of tourists arriving by car (ferries) apartments get goods nicked because they can simply load their car up before leaving.
Sad to say but never allow Italians to stay in accommodation without first taking details of their passports. As usual the dishonest few give the rest a bad name.

Crive wave almost sounds like hysteria! there is so little true crime that even petty events are headline news. Roll on September, although this year has been a quiet one thankfully.

Crime Wave "Hysteria"??

I am not trying to create hysteria. Just find out more from people who may know a little more than me. Also to make people more aware of what does actually happen in the lovely sleapy Ionian.

It is a little more than just the normal mid-summer madness that goes on out here. A mini Bank was done in Nidri, I believe also Lefkas. A small supper market held up at knife point. A large boat lifted out of Tranquil bay.

This would seem to be more than the odd outboard and tender.

I have been visiting the area for some 20 years and this year seems to have been more worrying.

Lifted......hehe

A Large boat lifted.....so, did they use a large crane then????

There was a bit in the local rag about the Bank (it was the delivery van) allegedly local copper has been arrested for being in on the act, he even paid for the robbers accommodation and asked for the CTV tapes to be wiped!
You could not make it up:D

Locals, eh? Haven't quite caught up with Tottenham yet. So, perhaps, a crime ripple, rather than a wave. Certainly not a tsunami with hundreds affected.

Think of those queues at the police station in Barcelona - hundreds a day reporting bags nicked. Been there, suffered that.

+1,
but in Corfu, there has been a marked increase in house/shop breakins, funnily enough mainly expat houses! and petty theft around the marina, nothing too big.

Lefkada Chief of Police arrested

Detectives investigating the armed robbery of a security van in the village of Nidri have arrested the Chief of Lefkada police on suspicion of masterminding the raid which netted 66000 Euros.

The four armed robbers who escaped after the raid were found to have been staying in a hotel in the area in rooms paid for by the police chief who also attempted to erase the registration details of the records in the hotel.

Blimey! One London looter was apparently caught with £40 000 worth of 'affirmative shopping'. The Greeks aren't even in the same league! :) :)

Chief of Police!!!!

Wow. I did not know that. I had been told locals. Neither did I know it was a security van filling the mini bank (I guess).

Still I guess it is no worse than other places. It is good that they would seem to have taken him out of service. Wonder if he was on his own?

I just do not want things to get worse. It is a nice place.

Just got back from Sivota where people still leave their keys in their cars and the place is full of Italians.

Did notice that people are more careful in Lefkada where I saw a group of 9 and 10 year old urchins, supervised by an adult woman, mobbing tourists and locals alike whilst trying (unsuccessfully) to steal their wallets. I gathered that the mini-muggers were not Greek (or Italian, though I've had that trick puled on me in Rome).

You will find that they are Albanian gypsy's, particularly troublesome outside of the Champion Store just along the road from the Lefkada Marina, be very careful and keep your wits about you.

Petty theft

Many of you who have put into Nidri will know of the chandlers IGR run by Danny Keen, out of the goodness of his heart and with no thought of profit Danny has a small paperback exchange library, all that is asked is a small donation to the the Lefkada animal charity, a few weeks ago a kind person stole the collection box.

This act seems to me to be far more heinous than the efforts of the Chief of Police, If any one has knowledge of who the low life is that thinks his / her needs are greater than the suffering animals please make their name known.
