I have an old but hardly used Crewfit 150 automatic life jacket, everything is good excepts the soluble capsule unit which is now way out of date. The problem is Crewsaver say that the capsule unit is special to them and no longer available, it looks the same as the UML unit but has a smaller diameter fixing thread. Trawling the internet I have found a supply for pre 2009 jacket units but is only available as the capsule plus gas bottle at £25, half the price of a new KRU UK made jacket. As the jacket is now used only in the dinghy or when we have guests on for short trips I thought I would downgrade it to manual only operation. Question do I just leave it as it is and risk the capsule operating when it chooses too, or do I take the capsule off activate it in a bucket, take out the guts and blank off the end and then screw it back onto the jacket as a blanking plug. The jacket should then function as a manual jacket. Your views please.
