While you are collecting and collating the crews' medical details should you not also get an insight into their fiscal status? Apart from not lumbering you with the medical costs of their emergency, it could be useful to know whether it is worthwhile attempting to recover costs for any damage they do to you (emotional?) or your vessel. Perhaps assigning full power of attorney to the skipper on joining the vessel should be mandatory.

Yes, the owner of the boat has a duty of care to the people on board it so he should certainly request the detailed information required to give their finances a good check over. Make sure they're making sensible investments and good decisions about utility sevice providers. Just as you would do if someone was visiting your house or travelling in your car.

This, of course, leads on to the need for each crew member to have a full medical check (at their own expense) and have satisfactory references from at least two discredited members of Parliament.

As long as they can pay for their bar bill ;)

Well I never thought I'd do this but ....

;)

If your going foreign, the skipper is responsible for any bills + repatriation, of any crew!

Can I add a substantial life insurance policy made out in favour of the skipper to the requirements? And does anyone know which body part of the crew member the skipper should keep to prove his claim?

Got to be the bit with the fingerprints, throw the rest away, subject to MARPOL of course.
