Crewing the ARC - what to pack (and not to take)?

They are mostly not joking! Wouldnt call chasing the sun a milk run exactly, Ive had some sporting moments on various crossings. But coming back puts hairs on yer chest. Normally allow for 2 gales..... :encouragement:

It's a very different pond when you are heading East, but the rewards are far higher (rewards read Azores)

The first time I ever spent in the Azores (any island) without it raining was after a west-east crossing this April. Starting to think that there might be something in this global warming.....

And I remembered to give the over rated 'Peter Sport' a big miss.

Twas a weird weather year this year, early on anyway - after mid Feb the jet stream was mostly pointing at Morocco with the lows tracking much further south than normal, filled up the nearly empty reservoirs in Portugal. Pointing quite far south again on and off now so anyone trying to get down to Canaries might have a bit of a slog in the next week ....

Yeah, to meet deadlines we motored about half the distance from Antigua to Barcelona, glad its not my fuel bill....

The same boat left the Med yesterday and hope to be here before the front thats expected Saturday.

First ARC has got off on good winds by the look of it. Next one on thursday is looking slow to start and possibly by the main one (OP be prepared!) is gonna be sloooow start and fracturing trade winds for a long way out. But thats a way off and we all know about forecasts...

Because it promotes knowledge and understanding and stimulates the mind.

He can try Yoga and mediation and finally let his rhythm settle to that of the Earths natural rhythm and be at peace.
Do you feel generally happier and more peaceful when you’re out in nature, away from noise, traffic jams, and neon lights? It is not just that you left the city behind. Or that you’re a person who likes nature. In nature, your body more easily tunes into the Earth’s frequency and can restore, revitalize, and heal itself more effectively.

The Earth behaves like a gigantic electric circuit. Its electromagnetic field surrounds and protects all living things with a natural frequency pulsation of 7.83 hertz on average — the so-called “Schumann resonance,

He could, if he was a sucker for that sort of mystic woo. Personally, I find the neon lights quite handy if I'm looking for a bar, restaurant, movie, or any of the other things I enjoy through living in an advanced civilisation; the sort of civilisation that came up with little things like GPS [or even astro if you want to go old school], well-found boats that can take me across an ocean, and bottled gas so I can have a hot cuppa en-route.
Nature's fine and has its place, but I've yet to pick up Radio 4 on 7.83 hertz.

As all life is a balance is needed if that is what you need to balance your life go for it , not mystic wooos the earths magnetic field resonates at that frequency and as nature works within the earths cycles then nature will follow , one example is the magnetic frequency and the moon effect on turtles returning to the beach they were born on , even though they have never been their since birth, it is believed that using frequencies and magnetic forces allow this to happen , it also percales to large insect births , like locust swarms and the butterflies , as do mammals and sharks in the sea, all use the earths magnetic field , as humans we are of the earth as well and are neurological capable of picking up these frequencies, the problem is you surrounded yourself with so much white noise we cannot tap into it , that is why when you are in the ocean and have nothing to distract you , turn of your non essential electrical systems and connect.

You'll be spouting about lay lines & water dowsing next.

I sometimes wonder if people realise how noisy saying actually is.......

its the nosie of the wind , come on then how many people enact their trbute to Neptune on crossing the Equator and always give a wee dram on the beginning and the end of a journey , superstitious wooo wooo :D

The first time I crossed the Equator I was on a Destroyer and full respect to Neptune was duly shown.

Last year I sailed across the line on a Bavaria (!) near the Galápagos Islands. This time, two of us decided to celebrate the occasion with hands to bathe. It was bloody freezing. ;)

Apologies to the OP for turning this into a me gobbling off thread.....

Thanks all for your replies – very helpful
And even the little details like headphones, Kindle, sleep mask – already on the list but good reminders thanks.

So it looks like I will leave the sleeping bag but take a thin sleeping bag liner instead, saving a bit of space and weight.

Thin thermals. The first few nights can be a bit chilly. Oilskins are a must, squalls have very cold rain. You can get away without boots. .
Happy also to leave the Dubarry boots behind. Oilskins seem a more mixed view – probably as depends a lot on the weather that you get for the trip. Most trips might be fine with just a light jacket – but if get a bad year and land a week of headwinds might regret not having them. So perhaps take but vacuum bag and hope they stay sealed in their bag!

Long sleeve UV shirt for when the sun is fiercest!
Yes, suncream in, and boat has bimini. But agree that should take at least one long sleeve top to prevent sunburn, and/or to allow recovery and avoid it getting serious if the arms start to feel the heat.

Turn up on watch 5 minutes early and you'll be the most popular guy on board.
It's also worth considering how well you are going to get on with your fellow crewmen (and/or women) and whether you have confidence in them. If you don't know them it's worth arranging a short cruise beforehand if possible.
Two great people points also. Worked out how to set the alarm on my wristwatch. And I joined the boat and crew for the delivery trip out to Gran Canaria, which was a great trip.

Not sure what this ARC thing is but it sounds rather tiresome and middle class. Does anyone take fags and gin?
Certainly hope there won’t be any fags and don’t partake of gin. But a nice red wine would be great for the sundowner.

And finally, remind me the GPS coordinates for the public libraries mid Atlantic ?
He can find a public library for that.
Thanks again. Just need to start a crowd funding for my RyanAir baggage ;-)

Do the crews still have to jump into the Marina Bar pool wearing whatever! on arrival then down the Pint Rum Punch? With attendees to the bar staff encouraging you to buy more Rum Punches? as if anyone needed encouragement to quaff more Rum Punches?:encouragement:
