Hi,

We are a large family leaving UK in September to cross the Atlantic to the Carribean on our brand new Lagoon 420 catamaran looking for competant and adventurous individual or couple to help us on the long passages (Biscay and Atlantic) and possibly beyond if it works out. You must like children (six aged 6 to 12) for obvious reasons. Experience desirable but not essential. Non-smokers only. Food provided, crew pay for travel to and from the boat. Must be willing to visit the Isle of Arran to get to know one another.

If you take an extra couple of crew on board for the passages - and this sounds like a sensible move re watchkeeping, as none of the children are old enough to stand a watch - then you will have 10 people on a 42' cat.
I presume you have 4 double cabins and the saloon - would the extra crew member(s) doss in the saloon?

Have you considered the provisioning required for an Atlantic passage? Assuming the passage from eg Canaries to the Caribbean takes 20 days, you should stock for 30 days minimum, IMHO. You would want to allow a minimum of 1 gallon of water per person per day, hence this is 300 gallons (almost 1.4 tons) minimum to carry on board. Any water made by a water maker is a bonus for showers etc. And food for 300 person days is a lot of food to carry..... as well as toys and personal possessions for 10 people - you are then looking at possible weight issues re overloading.

Its funny how its possible to miss out on one important little word "six". I had thought just a couple of kids - makes a big difference /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif .... some good points made there.

Doesnt matter if the boat is not even built yet, the opinions expressed above are still relevant - perhaps it is even better if he hasn't bought the boat yet, as then he has time to re-consider the viability of the whole plan!

Rather than commissioning a brand new 42' cat, it might be worth considering the purchase of an older, larger catamaran that might be better able to cope with 10 people on board for a transatlantic passage.

Unlike the authors of previous replies I wont offer advice that hasn’t been asked for, I guess that you have already considered all the problems associated with such a trip. Your adventure sounds amazing and I only wish that I had the vision and commitment to plan something similar. WHEN you start your sea trials lookout for a blue snappy with 172 sail number, would love to say hello and wish you all the best for your trip. We’re over in Lamlash on a regular basis.

I'm in total agreement with what you say and has been said before. However between now May and September seams to me to be a relatively short time to build a boat and get familiar with it before undertaking such a voyage.
