Just a quick note to publically thank Yanita for his help in sailing my boat round from Ramsgate to Ipswich at the weekend.........

I was in need of a crew, and he willingly stepped into the frame!

Sadly we had to motor for 13 hours, but I have to say, he was excellent company....

Will......I look forward to meeting up with you In Oostende sometime for a beer or two!

Think nothing of it - only too happy to help.
As I still have to wait one more week before I can take Yanita out again I would have jumped at any opportunity to get on the water.

A little too soon.....

I musn't forget that kids and SWMBO have never really stepped foot aboard anything bigger than a dinghy before, and we all have a lot to learn such as getting alongside!... and the last weekend in May will only be their 3rd ever time aboard....

We will definitely be up for some channel crossings... perhaps even later this season if time allows......

Will add however that she is going to be a lovely boat for channel crossings if this weekend is anything to go by..... firstly she proved that she can motor for 12/13 hours on Saturday... and secondly on Sunday she showed how nice she is to sail.... lovely and balanced on the helm, and absolutely flying..... it was great when we overtook a Bav 38 upwind........ pointing higher, and going faster!.... making 5kts in 12kts apparent
 
Did the Bav38 have in-mast furling and no vertical batterns? We overtook one in the solent the other weekend /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
Have to say I didn't pay enough attention to see whether she had the battens in or not or indeed whether she had an in mast furling main.....

Although I would have though that had the battens been missing it would have been kind of obvious, even from a distance......

I was more interested in helming what felt like a lovely responsive boat in her element.. guess I'm besotted.... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
Pah ... get back to your Dinghy Racing ... well - the feel of it anyway, you've got to overtake every other boat out there ... you know you do! Well - I do anyway! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Just happened that we had an instructor onboard and he told us about a little experiment he did with an in-mast furling main ....

Trucking along at 7 knots with full genoa and main - close on the wind ...
Furled the main ... and dropped 0.2 knots ... !!!

It was one without battens in, and I accept that it doesn't really matter unless you want the extra power, but it does make you wonder if it is worth getting the main out at all in those conditions!
 
Lol..... well I've got a lovely Hood properly horizontally battened, slab reefed main, and it seems to do the trick!.... I did also have a 150% genny fully unfurled as well....

Seems that your right about the dinghy sailing bit..... i'm already twiddling and tweaking to get a bit more boat speed....... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
 
Do doubt you've already been polishing that keel then!

There is one HUGE advantage with the yacht over the dinghy ... it is easier to check the slot when tuning - try doing that on an RS800 whilst helming!!
 
Ah - thats not fair ... I want one ...! but I've got a crew to play with ... and we recently downgraded to an RS400 .. a lot more forgiving when you hit the bottom /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
