Maybe max for submarines? But I guess average height was smaller then, anyway.

Despite my dating back well before decimalisation (and having recently picked a textbook off my shelf and noting it was "37/6 net"), I still read "1/3" as one third and wondered what the unit was...

When I was a lad I was shown round a RN submarine which was anchored in Dover harbour and the "guide" said he got ten bob a day extra for being a submariner. Inflation will have improved that I'm sure!

Heard or read somewhere that the army still has the records for squadies that fought in the Boer War. Average height was 5'2". Turns our bread and dripping isn't such a great diet after all.
