I'm looking for 2 crew to help me take our Nordhavn 40 motorboat from Portishead to Plymouth on the first date after 27 September when tides and weather are OK. Travel expenses will be reimbursed. I've done this before on here with great success, see this thread.

Have a great trip, would love to have helped but will be on a ferry to Spain when you plan to leave.

Where in Plymouth are you over wintering?

Hi John - Sorry you are not available. We are not over-wintering in Plymouth, this is the first leg of a 700 NM trip to Southwold in Suffolk where our boat is going to be out for a lot of work during the winter, almost a refit. I might run a thread on that if anyone is interested. One of the jobs is to install solar panels, inspired by what you showed us on your boat and more recently Mike's (Hurricane's) thread. The current plan is to position the boat in Plymouth then pootle along the Devon coast for a couple of weeks, and finish off with another long run up to the North Sea.

Almost goes without saying that we will be interested! You won't regret installing solar panels. Can I ask why Southwold, not somewhere I'd have thought of?

In a nutshell - Javelin. Long-time poster on the PBO forum. Now writes "View from the Boatyard" for PBO magazine. I was very impressed by his writing and pictures and I was in Suffolk last year so I called in to see the yard he works at - Harbour Marine Services. It is an old-fashioned full service yard. All the skills you could want, an affordable hourly rate, a detailed written estimate before the job starts, and a weekly report (and bill) so you know how the job is going. And by great good fortune they have just bought a 35 ton Wise Lift to replace their old 25 tonner which couldn't have lifted us. After our two lift-outs in the Solent I was seriously doubting that we could continue to own our Nordhavn. We just can't afford south coast hourly rates. Also we found it stressful to coordinate the different skills. Our last lift-out was at Portishead where Alan Stafford looked after us very well, but he is one man and the list of work we need to have done is very long, almost all dating from the original survey 2 years ago when we bought the boat. It's too much for one man and I don't know anywhere on the south coast we could afford. I grew up in Suffolk and have family and old friends locally so it doesn't feel at all remote to me.

Interesting, food for thought.......

Enjoy the trip and look forward to reading about the work being done.
