I am picking up my son from Portsmouth Harbour (Portsmouth side) on Saturday Morning, but I am not sure from where to collect him.

I presume the Gosport ferry berth would not be a sensible choice, and Gunwarf has a coded entrance system, which will make access for him difficult.

Any one any thoughts, or should he get on the Gosport Ferry and cross to Haslar Marina?

gosport ferry and collection from fuel pontoon (D PONTOON) at camper's / premier would be my choice. the gate by the office is normally open for the school boats, only short walk from ferry....

you will need to contact qhm to cross to pompey.

Aidy - yes - I think you are right - he is Familiar with the Campers - sorry Premier fuel berth so that is probably the best idea.

You can pick up from the camber in Old Portsmouth, but you need to obey LNTM (call QHM etc) and car parking is expensive this side. You can generally pick up on the so-called waterbus pontoon (big pontoon with linkspan, by Broad St carpark), but don't leave the boat and be prepared to move for pilot boats etc. Otherwise there are ladders round near the bridge tavern.
The quayside is not good for yachts, you should have two crew to fend off.
I would use the waterbus pontoon, and make sure the crew are waiting not the yacht!

be aware of the wash from car ferry side thrusters!
Also dredging is under way round the bridge tavern side, so all a bit busier than normal.

You could always get a short stay at Gunwharf, pop round the shops while you're waiting, have a coffee, then you'll have the code for when he arrives. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have picked up passengers from Gunwharf before. If it's daytime there will be someone on duty to open the gate and the duty manager seemed quite happy to allow me to do a 'touch and go'.

Pick him up at Gun Wharf.
Lots of people about at the weekend to let you in, or the Marina guys are approachable.
Dont forget to radio QHM to cross from Ballast and back again.

We will try the Gunwharf quai pick up! Call QHM will save me doing a radio check with Solent CG as I have not used it this year....... (light blue fuse paper)

Thanks everyone....

Make sure you put the vhf mike back in its holder properly; they had an open mike on Ch11 yesterday and QHM had the police launch chasing yachts around the Solent trying to find the culprit.

Calling QHM is still obligatory, excerpt from LNTM:

Gunwharf Quays/Town Camber - Traffic Management. The following traffic management plan for craft under 20 metres in length (bound to/from Town Camber/Gunwharf Quays) is now in force:
a. Arrival. In the interest of safety all Small Boats bound for Gunwharf Quays/Town Camber are to enter harbour through the Small Boat Channel. Vessels are only to cross the Main Channel when they are to the north of Ballast Beacon, and permission has been obtained from QHM on VHF Channel 11. Vessels fitted with engines are to use them from entering the Small Boat Channel until arrival at Gunwharf Quays/Town Camber.
b. Departure. Small Boats departing from Gunwharf Quays and Town Camber are to obtain permission from QHM on VHF Channel 11 before proceeding. Small Boats leaving the Town Camber are to obtain approval before slipping and again when in the vicinity of The Point prior to crossing the Main Channel. All vessels are then to cross the Main Channel direct to Ballast Beacon and leave harbour through the Small Boat Channel. Vessels fitted with engines are to use them until exiting the Small Boat Channel. If any of these vessels are not fitted with VHF radio, fixed or portable, then they are to be escorted by a marshalling craft or accompany another vessel so fitted. When on station a QHM Harbour Patrol Launch or Volunteer Harbour Patrol Launch may undertake this task

would I ever......

I accept that QHM regs demand calling on Ch 11 before crossing from or to Ballast and I have in fact always done so. I do though remember reading somewhere that it had or would change. Anyway I stand corrected. Thanks.
Chris I hope that you're not on bread and water in some dark place!

There was some talk a while back about ceasing the need to call up to cross to/from Ballast but Harbour Control wanted it to remain and so it does.
