On refelection you are right. Maybe the original post was just too vague. Not sure 50% is fair though.
 
Good opportunity for someone to experience the lifestyle without having to buy a boat first. Reasonable to expect crew to pay if it's a holiday, not reasonable if they are helping you out.
Saying that, if I was going anyway then as long as I always had a beer in my hand when at a bar and had help with the cleaning, that would be enough.

If I was invited on holiday on someone else's boat I would gladly and expect to contibute my fare share of the costs.

I think it would be wise for you to give any paying guest an idea of what their contribution is likely to add up to. May come as a shock to the un initiated.
 
I think your offer is not an unreasonable one Ian but aren't you in danger of being a skippered charter if you take money from someone with all that implies for insurance and charter regulations.

Not critising your post just raising a serious point. FWIW if I were coming I would expect to make a proportionate contribution.

Also a true reflection that most of us manage to run our boats on a tight budget and therefore a contribution is very welcome. The beer in hand at the bar is also a very attractive consideration.
 
No, he's ok. Having (out of necessity only) studied the charter law for UK flagged boats there is no commercial charter and therefore no need for coding if the folks on board are (a) friends or family of owner AND (b) they pay no more than a contribution towards the running costs of the trip concerned - ie there is no profit element

Having been both paid and unpaid crew on short and long trips, and having used 'unpaid' 'crew' (once, disastrously, as I was let down by a forumite at a moment's notice and without explanation or apology), may I add a few thoughts..?

If I were paying 50%, I'd expect to get 50% of the skippering and helming - and not just on passage, but berthing, locking, etc... Why? The helming is the real pleasure, and if it's 50% of the cost, it should be 50% of the pleasure. So, if you know someone whom you trust to helm the boat, then the 50% is (just about) OK.

But, effectively, you're asking someone to finance and facilitate your trip, so it would be much more reasonable to take someone you like, and ask for a 'contribution', perhaps 25% or so...

I have never asked for a contribution to any costs, and am happy to let trusted competent friends skipper and helm my boat, and have enjoyed providing a bit of 'tuition' free of charge...

Bottom line? If you can't afford to do a bit of cruising in your boat, buy a smaller one, and get out there and enjoy it!!!

(Having just re-read the 'full of...' comments by the original poster, may I offer the thought that the forum has never been full of people trying to rip each other off?)

How horrid everyone is being! I would happily come along and agree the terms. I have rented a pirivate jet to take me to your boat, ordered a new set of waterproofs and bought a 2005 set of charts which obv will be needed if things have been a bit tight....
