If anyone is ever in need of extra crew for a trip to Holland or Belgium, please let me know. I'm after increasing my experience prior to taking my own boat across at some stage in the future . One way trips would also be of interest; it's the crossing I want to do rather than getting in the way on someone's holiday. I know this should probably be in a different forum, but this is specifically an East coast request.

Thanks for reading.

Tidlacy - thanks for the response. Pm will be sent.

Sailor man - yes indeed, I have a Twister 'Sniper' and you have been kind enough to photograph her for me. I have done a couple of trips across as crew - last year I went to Ostend on a Jenneau 36 but previous to that many years before with the OYC. I know my boat is more than capable of doing the trip but I could do with a bit more confidence and experience before I take her across myself.

I think you need to find a strong crew and then do it in your own boat. The first time as skipper will always be the first time and that's the most exciting and confidence building. You could also go in rough convoy with another boat - this May BH being a good opportunity.

Superb idea
Oostende vor Anker there should be 1/2 a dozen boats going over "Roll-On"

At the risk of demonstrating my complete inability to communicate in anything other than english, is there an English version of the 'Voor anker' site or do I need to use google translate?

I would support the wisdom offed by the previous posts. A crossing as skipper with able crew is the best scenario. I managed my first nth sea crossing with a couple of months of taking possession of our previous Sadler, my dear wife who puked most of the return and with my Young daughters As crew one of whom was convinced we were doomed! That said we had a great time and my confidence in self and boat soared. The right conditions sought of course. I am looking at the bank hol and would be good to go in convoy! Last year I had to leave after the Nth sea race had departed and went on my tod!

Have I got it right that its free to enter? I presume that doesn't apply to berthing for the event?

Don't know about entering, most go for the look around some very special and nice boats. Square riggers and all sorts last time I was there
For mooring just take the first right turn as you go in, find a spot and Robert will tell you to move if you get it wrong, then take a small contribution from you before smiling sweetly and leaving you to it
Excellent weekend, not to be missed

Provided your boat is over 40 years old you can enter the event as a participant.
Entry as a participant is totally free - as is berthing.
There are also several drinks parties and concerts where entry is free for skippers and crews.
The organisors are well aware that it are the participating boats who make the festival, so skippers and crews are well looked after.
But, if you're seriously considering entering it would be best to do so soon.
According to the Oostende voor Anker Facebook page they have 154 confirmed participants already - cut-off figure is 165.

For boats not participating in the festival, the nearest to the festival you can berth is at the RNSYC - Montgomerry dock. First right as you come in.
Berthing is not free. Robert will be along shortly to take your money and to dispense his more than colourful views on all the wrongs in the world.
