Crew: Any chance of a sail this weekend?

I'm finding it difficult to believe that anyone is going out this weekend, given the forecast. Being cought out in it on passage, hopefully with lots of sea room, is on thing but putting out into it just for fun or a race?

I know it's only Lake Solent but in 75mph winds it's still bloody stupid.
Whatever happened to seamanship?

Or is it just me?

I know of one school who are still going ahead with a day skipper course tomorrow. That is ridiculous.
Usually when I go out in these sorts of conditions the one boat I nearly always see is the Westerley belonging to BOSS.

Frankly the conditions look a bit dubious.
A

Quite agree.
In my opinion no one should attempt to go out in these conditions who have not been out in these conditions before unless it is with people who have more than just a little experience of such.
However, for those who do have the chance to go out in such conditions for a 'short' period of time and with 'experienced' people on board and in an 'appropriate' boat it is an opportunity to learn in a resonably controlled environment rather than experiencing it for the first time when caught out somewhere.

Within the Solent there are many places to stick your nose out for a short while and then tuck back into once you've had enough. The reality of course is that the sea state does not reflect the real wind strength and so it is only wind you're experiencing, not open seas.

I think we all look forward to hearing how the sail was this weekend.

Talulah, we expect pictures of the crew on the rail, in bikinis. Apparently its still summer, so somebody said :)

Believe it or not but there was due to be a cameraman on board this weekend for some 'brochure' shots. Unfortunately he has caught swine flue and has had to postpone until December.
The woman whilst a liitle disappointed are still coming even though they won't get the relevant professional photos to add to their portfolio. The photographer was especially important as he had the super wide angle lens for the below deck/rear cabin shots in evening wear and glamour wear. The makeup artist is worried that she won't know exactly which or how much of the foundation creams to apply given the lighting in a boat and will need some help in both deciding which to apply and in the application.
The weekend will therefore become a dry run of the shoot in December complete with a test of the waterproof camera cases for on deck action with a more subdued look for the evening down below.

Still once place available.

Well we stuck our nose out for a short while.
The bikinees got a little wet.
The max wind speed we experienced was 48 knots.
The ferry thought we were in difficulties and raised the alarm but all was in control.
Unfortunately I couldn't hear channel 11 in the wind to respond to their call.
Currently in Port Solent marina having a cup of tea.
Saw two Sunsail boats out.

Glad that you are safe ... I heard the ferry call in that a yacht was in difficulties (Ch 11) ... 'can you see the name?' asks QHM ... 'Talulah' says the ferry ... cr*p says I:eek:

I have only seen ONE yacht out in the harbour all day ... if yours is a white one that motored slowly towards Port Solent an hour or so ago, it was probably you:)

ps Chimet currently gusting F10

Well hope you thought it was worth it! Even the ferries called it a day so no wonder they thought a boat out in these conditions must be on passage and in difficulties. Poor show to have concerned them and then not replying to calls on radio! Why was no-one listening to the radio oh yes, too much wind but that isn't an excuse for not keeping a listening watch when you obviously had several crew aboard with you.
I wouldn't have slung my least favourite dog outside this morning. At Lee on Solent I stopped to watch the Solent:confused: at 11am not a mast in sight, surprisingly, just saw the last sailing of the Soton - E Cowes ferry on his way home to watch TV for the rest of the day.

I always think it's worth pushing your limits every now and again. I push my father all the time becasue i've been out in horrendous weather whilst racing with a spinny up (no where near as bad as this, 45kt gusts one falmouth week) I'm now the one who pushes my dad to see where his and the boat's limits are, never heard him once say he hasn't enjoyed it.

Admittidley, today is past my limit :D

would have been interesting though :)

Wish I'd seen this last night, I'd have come down with a 1Ds MkII, 16-35mm f2.8, couple of flashes and had an interesting day :-)

Mucho thanks to Edward and the rest of the crew for a cracking weekend on the water. I really appreciate it.

Great company, superb food, great boat and some fantastic boating action both days.
