Creosote?

I'm considering using a creosote substitute in the bilge, any thoughts about the wisdom of this?

Old fashioned creosote is no longer available except for professional use.

The modern substitute has no wood preserving properties. It is purely " decorative" . What you propose would seem to have no merits at all

Creosote substitute is probably even more useless in a wet environment like a bilge than it is on a fence. Its just a rather short-lived woodstain really.

Real Creosote is available off the shelf at my local agricultural supplies dealer and doubtless at one near you too but is nasty stuff in a marine environment. Please don't use it on or around waterways.

Thanks for all of the replies, and thoughts given. I am now going to use 'Boiled Linseed Oil', which I'm familiar with. The boat has this in other areas anyway, more so this coming year as we'll go back to wood below the waterline, after removing the antifoul and primer.
Good point about not using it near the 'Broads' also.
Back when I was a child, there was a children's programme on a Friday afternoon, 'Crackerjack', if anyone remembers it? They did one sketch where the 'hosts' were throwing creosote over each other, in a comic/pantomime fashion! A different world today!

Primer and a couple of coats of Danboline, grey or red. If you want it to smell nice a little Stockholm Tar will do the trick ... also useful as aftershave! ... :encouragement:
