Having decided to sell our boat (SWiMBO wants a "real boat"), I thought I would try to sell it privately first - before we resort to the "8% plus VAT" men. In order to assist the process, I thought a small web page with half a dozen pictures plus description would be usefull.

Can anyone advise on a simple way of creating a web page and where to get it hosted for free? Some years ago I created and maintained a complex local Scout Group site - all in HTML and FTP uploads. I've forgotten most of it and just want something simple this time.

then you should, I have definitely seen AOL homepages.

Have a nose on the aol main pages, they should tell you the addresses and stuff.

Otherwise if you can accept adverts appearing there is geocities and msn for free hosting. Trouble is, the free sites will never appear in a search engine.

My Son uses THIS SITE Don't know if it's what your looking for but it is very easy to upload photos and text and as you say you could direct links to it.

IMO the hard fact is that if you are setting up a website just to sell your boat it would be a waste of time and money.

To have a successful website it needs to be found and rank well, there is a set of "rules" for writing a good site and getting it ranked, it is not something that happens overnight, it evolves over a long period, changing text, getting good links etc.

I would suggest as previously said advertise on the free sites or even pay for paid advertising, it will prove cheaper unless you are very very lucky.

People need to see what they are buying, A web site will do this. But you need to dirrect people to the site by using the free advert sites etc.

Spot on - that's exactly what vivastreet will do for you; and it does it in a few days.

NDH - try vivastreet for directing people to your site. Take you 15 mins to set it up so you've nothing to lose.

i am very computer illiterate but managed to negotiate setting up a blog site.

If you click on my yacht vega blogsite link below there is a button you can click to create your own.In half an hour you will have a site with photos uploaded ideal for potential purchasers to look at. good Luck with the boat sale/purchase.

Go for it! How can they charge 8%. Unbelievable!

If you want something *very simple*, I can whip something up for you.

They will if yer submit them - may be a bit of a wait though.

But as already said, they ain't gonna be on page 1 of Google - but IMO still worth submitting cos' if folk only vaguely recall what your site was called they do have a chance of finding it.

I would do my own website, you get as much room as you want for pictures and descriptions, more than any "free" for sale site will give you - just need to include the link.

Pictures sell, especially those on Sunny Days where folk are anchored somewhere nice having fun / "living the dream".......rather than a picture of the same boat with 3 foot of bow sticking out of a Taurpaulin whilst chocked up with bits of random sized wood and stuck in the corner of a boat yard on a wet wednesday in January....... If you want ideas go and look on the usual boat for sale websites for vessels being sold my Americans.
